Version 8587:
As of this version Familiars will be more in-line with Animal Companions, meaning:
Familiar Summoning Cooldown:
You will not be able to summon your familiar as soon as you unsummon it and will wait until a cooldown period has ran out. Any time you will try to summon your familiar within this cooldown, you will receive an error message as well as spell failure visual effect.Once the cooldown is over you will receive a message that you can summon your familiar again.
Familiar Lives Matter:
You can no longer let your familiar soak damage and then unsummon it and resummon it back at full health. Like Animal Companions the damage it suffered will be remembered and applied when resummoned.This will be factored in until your familiar is healed or after rest/reset.
Reasoning:
For the sake of transparency I am also including here the reason why we did this.Originally in vanilla NWN, you can only summon your familiar once per rest. This made them rather useless in CoA. To make them more useful we allowed you to summon them as long as they are not killed.
As a result mages were able to have an infinite amount of familiars to use, which was too good to be true.
