Shards Online new kickstarter
-
Are we considering a switch?
-
That decision rests with the DM Team, being able to start to build custom worlds probably won't happen until the fall and their actual importation likely will be at the end of this year. Nevertheless given NWN's age and the potential of Shards it makes sense to support it and hope for its success so that option is avaialible if we want it.

Random thought triggered by something on their website - linked servers with slightly different rulesets/spells/modified physics could be very interesting to represent different planes/areas
-
Currently no discussion is in place to shift to move to another game.

October Community Roundtable laying out Alpha 1 release and beyond walking through the newly updated roadmap here; http://shardsonline.com/development-roadmap/ TDLR; Game is will be complete in summer 2017 with full customization then. -
Shards Online's first Alpha launch will come January 13th, being able to host your own server and mod won't be available to everyone until it goes on STEAM this spring. The developers are going to be adding a few more features in the mean time such as archery and expanding the main map by x25 its current size. Speaking of modding, however the following features have been confirmed for the first quarter of 2017
Server Launcher: No more manually editing XML files. Our admins will have an integrated web interface for controlling both their development and public servers. Our beta version of the Server Launcher will be available to admins with this upcoming Alpha Release!
Live Server Editing: Modders will be able to make changes to the world objects and spawners, create new object templates and even edit scripts directly from in-game while connected to the server.
Custom Client Assets: Modders will be able to create custom world maps, items and monsters using the Unity editor and integrate them with their Shards Online mods.Latest community roundtable is also viewable here, the client has come a long way since the last time it was showcased

When do you think we'll be able to create player-controlled servers to try our own?
-
STEAM release is when they are aiming to open up server modding and hosting to everyone is my understanding, that is going to happen this Spring so 3 months give or take. However, initially modding will be done scripting wise until the ability to add custom assets which is basically maps, equipment, new creatures etc. comes in the summer. You can also check out the twitch channel and see the latest community roundtable which has a lot of alpha footage https://www.twitch.tv/shardsonline/v/114720644
-
Addendum: If you want to get access to modding early you can pledge $200 and that will make you a pre-alpha admin. This will let you host your own server and give you access to all the scripts and whatnot. Nobody is getting custom assets till the summer but still a lot of folks have been able to do some pretty awesome stuff with the scripting side alone. Almost any system in the game can be rewritten, so if we have any talented coders who want to start writing a D20 ruleset in LUA by all means, knock yourselves out.

Shards Online is getting A) Name Change and B) A much larger starting map shown off in this new video below. If you go to Pax East this year definitely check it out.

Now that April Fools day is over, here is some actual footage from the server working on the 5th edition ruleset. Granted still very much a work in progress but a good majority of it is custom assets rather than using the vanilla ones. STEAM launch is still scheduled for spring.

Also another screenshot of the 5th edition ruleset character sheet itself

Am i the only person that thought moving to something like shards would have been a good idea?
-
It would be, but it's worth waiting until for one the 5th edition ruleset is actually finished for starters. There are no races other than human until someone makes a sub race mod or purchases the proper assets on the Unity store.
-
Not sure if switching would be a good idea. In 5 years of working on it they've gone from old runescape graphics to nwn2.
Nevermind that it'd take five times longer to remake coa in a different game engine than it's currently taking to make v6.
NwN Enhanced edition actually allows the modding community to make character remeshes/retextures on par with some of the better skyrim mods out there.
-
Doesn't have to be one or the other, you could have folks want to stick to NWN for v6 and also have a server for the new platform. That's what happened when NWN2 was released back in the day. Tales of Moonsea is still around.
