Devastating critical and PVP modes
-
Hi,
I'd like to know if setting the pvp mode accordingly protects other players from my companion's devastating critical. I don't want to see anyone getting to the fugue.
thanks

lets not bother with the irelevent comments or images and help answer the question instead.

As far as I've seen most instant death effects I've used on subdual only knocked people out. I don't know about pets though but in duals summons don't kill so I'd figure the same coding applies.
Unless pets are different?

I can't comment on the server mechanics, as I have never read anything about Dev Crits here. However, I imagine that your companion is a shark of sorts? Guessing from your other post here. If that is the case, I don't see why it would be an issue. Sure instant death from a dev crit sucks but the parameters necessary to pull it off are rather tricky. Firstly you have to follow it into the water, then it has to roll a 20 on you, then you have to fail your fort check. I think that all those things are far less likely to occur than any of the other insta-death methods on the server. IE attuned gems of slay living/phant killer etc.
In short, I have no idea what the ruling is. But in my opinion, its okay to have it due to extremely low chance of it actually occurring.

Fish pets can fly outside of water

Fish pets can fly outside of water
Is that intended? Or a result of the limited NWN mechanics? I don't think there is an actual system in place to differentiate between aquatic and non-aquatic environments. Just our imagination and animations put in place. I could be terribly wrong though, I'll admit I am not that good with the mechanics of this game.

I have seen summons kill in duels. The summoner was down and unable to unsummon due to the prone position. The summons then proceeded to full damage the other opponent.

In that case I would just put the stipulation that aquatic companions (Sharks/Fish/Etc) can only be summoned in environs where they would actually be able to live. Summoning your shark companion to help you kill that grizzly in the mountains doesn't make much sense to me. And since the only companions I know of that have the Dev Crit feat are sharks, I think its still okay.

Nonsense, sharks are mammals, flying sharks are just gravitationally challenged.
You racist or something?
Also, from what I've seen pets have a tendency towards being able to do full damage pending on certain situations such as knocked out masters or what not.
I'd say avoid using it in pvp if you don't want to FD someone, unless its absolutely necessary.
-
Everything I've seen that deals instant death, doesnt kill in subdual.
-
well, I know I shouldn't hunt grizzlies with my shark. :)
But I have an idea, fitting my concept perfectly, that would include my shark fighting another player. In a situation I wouldn't like to kill anyone.
-
unsummon when he's at near death and throw a spell at the other dude. That's what I would do anyways
-
This is a serious question. How can anyone in COA have a summon with devastating critical?
-
no. dont unsummon when they are near death, that -will- kill them.
When you unsummon the creature leaves your control for a short time, during this time, it is like any NPC monster, and will kill.
-
I was one of those unlucky persons to get dev critted by a great white shark outside the east arabel gates. NOT FUN.
-
if you do fight underwater, might want to be careful about the drowning scripts.. E.g. if you get knocked out, that xx rounds left counter might still expire and the victim be killed? Not sure how it works but might be something to test out.

fyi: Sharks (superorder Selachimorpha) are a type of fish.
And, I'd get antsy if I see someone summoning fish out of water.
-
I have no idea on the OP, but will test next time I'm in game unless another DM knows for sure.
Also, not suggesting anyone is doing this - but summoning a shark or other aquatic animal outside of water is pretty much an exploit. So please don't do it!
Edit: Also, I had no idea there was an animal available with an instakill ability. Might have to review this.

Goblin Sharks have devistating critical, and can be tamed as animal companions
