Hello

Hello, I'm fairly new to the server.
I've met a few of you in game, I'm really not much of a forum person i just like logging in and playing the game.
Curiosity got the better of me and I thought I look around maybe find out some rules about certain classes. Such as why my cleric could not cast spells.
I was looking around and saw these screenshots and saying "How do I get in on that!" I'm not much of a role-player and in crowds the NWN chat easily makes be confused and fluttered.
I kept looking around and noticed this topic titled "Intrigue and Adventure VS CoA Sims" When i read through it a lot of things in there I just don't want to do. I was never one to push my characters motivations or goals I was more jumping on to others goals since other folks are generally more experienced and more creative then I am.
When i am in COA I'm trying to spend a couple of hours looking for a few folks to do a quest of some sort with since i find them so fun or just randomly explore through the woods since all this Ossacio wood must be worth something i have 80 pounds of it.
Nice to meet you all

Sure, you're playing right. There's nothing wrong, and in fact a great deal right with helping others with their plots. If everyone is only pushing their own thing, no one will move on with anything. It's not expected that everyone push personal plots. Someone needs to be a minion, and you can learn a great deal and have tons of fun being the flunky/trusted right hand man/hired help sort. The A&I post was set to address the issue of what do I need to get things done, since real world ideas most often won't work. Take for example, rebuilding a wall in Newhaven. It would seem fairly easy. There are unemployed refugees in the city, and stones and rubble laying about in the area. Toss some gold at the unemployed, have them grab and stack some rocks, and presto, rebuilt wall. However, what it really takes, is someone taking an afternoon or so to edit and change the module to reflect this new wall, or whatever. Having not done any building, I can't say how easy or time consuming this is, but I do know it means they can't be in game having fun while they do this. We all have limited time to spend here, so doing something like changing the module should be the result of efforts that made fun for as many people as possible. Hence, the ideas for what it would take to get these sorts of things done, as listed in that post. You don't have to do them to have fun or be an accepted member of the community. Pop in, have fun with chatting, questing, plotting, whatever the things you enjoy are. They key is to have fun with what you are doing. If you are doing that, you are playing right.

My first three years was like that, Helping the others, I was just recently I Strived for my Own goal and I am getting help with it. So there is no harm in the way you want to do things.
I do suggest you learn the forums, Alot happens on it and there is a great deal to learn as well.
Hope you have fun.

Nice to meet you all
An excellent approach! I wished more people would help others fulfil their dreams and goals. Working together on something more than halves the workload. As a player, I have often done this and found it vastly rewarding.
Oh, and Welcome!
-
I will tolerate and love the shit out of you.
As well, you are welcome to j oin the HERALDS OF THE APOCALYPSE plot I got going…<.<
-
@SpiffyHas:
I will grief and maim and kill you until the DM's ban me for it
As well, you should REALLY join THIS plot because it's SO MUCH BETTER THAN MY OWN!
There, fixed.
Welcome to CoA!

I was curious on the difference between a dm faction character and a non one. I've yet to see a difference between the two besides a title they call themselves.
I was looking at one character idea for example.
If i could do it myself i love to make a character "Say a gnome tinkerer" with special items that could provide special buffs or money, but the stronger the buff the higher chance the item would be to explode in you and everyone's face. besides that i be a normal adventurer, hitching on to others for fun.The problem here is to make and create said item that may be a waste of dm resources.

These things exist, already! Sort of!
A DM faction is just that. It's a faction on the server that has DM moderation/support, even if minor. Being a member earns you special perks, loot, gear and often times gets you some plot hooks. A DM faction player is a PC who is a member of said faction.
You should really check out the Company of the Gear of you like the idea of a gnome tinkerer.
And you can read this thread on how to apply for the factions.
And if you get stuck on a concept feel free to join #CoA and #CoACharacters for some helpful advice! We won't be TOO mean to you.

A DM faction doing this has been about since years.
Name's the Company of the Gear. (CoG) -
Sorry i think my message got lost in my example.
What would be the difference between a mage guild and a non mage guild wizard, besides the glow sticks?

A wizard that belongs to the Guild is given access to special lore, (relatively) free equipment, and companionship with other members of the current Tower in exchange for helping the Tower with their various projects. A non-Tower mage is simply that - mage free to wander and pursue his own experiments without adhering to Tower rules. That's sort of the rough cut version.

The Guild is a complex faction. A Novice is an entry level position, he or she sleeps in the Guild for free, has access to the forums, and other member's support in his/her plans.
An Apprentice is a fully fledged member, which means they have some degree of authority over the Gilded district, cool custom gear (which includes the staves, that can do some really neat things, just ask Shea :)) and more.
But what makes this faction interesting, and others as well, is the amazing group dynamic that cannot really be described in forum messages like this. What i wrote above doesn't even scratch the surface of cool. My first character was a novice for a couple of months, he never became a full member of the Guild and i never felt that as a detriment. It was just amazing fun. It is not required, but some have suggested that becoming a member in a DM faction is the best way of finding people to play with and learning more about the module. I sure as hell enjoyed it.

Any faction, Mages Guild, Sheriffs, whatever, are typically a hotbed for server plots and a gateway to the heart of the game. You’ll be involved in all the goings on, privy to plot information, embroiled in politics and never be wanting for friends or enemies. Furthermore, you generally benefit from faction support for your own objectives ~ whether from faction colleagues or DM intervention.

Greetings!
Having spent a few years here, I have only one advice to you newcomers: Flee. While there is still time.
Cheers.

there is no mechanical difference, but the one in the mage guild would be part of the faction and have access to the guild forum and so probably be more aware of what was occuring in the city.
The guild mage would also have access to various NPCs that reside in the guild tower and could address them here in the foprums and be more likely to expect a response, the quality of the question obviously being the main determining factor of course!
As you gain kudos within the guild you will gain perks above the basic ones of membership (free beds, limited storage) such as guild robes and items, and as importantly your voice will carry more weight within the guild with regards to any politics etc.
The same would apply in any other faction essentially, rank = better loot and more influence.
Also note that you could be a mage in the sheriffs, the legion or the red hart and have similar perks availible to you.
ps. those glow sticks are one of the best items created in the game, scripted for CoA specifically i believe.
