Dear CoA
-
Play interesting characters, do interesting things and people will stay logged to be around you.

The same dip happened after Cabal/ROT got killed off. COA is a wave that constantly goes up and down.
And RL is killing my playing time
I actually posted this in another topic >_>

Whenever there is a big threat, Slime, Cabal, Scarlet Talons, Dragon…. there is activity, but then once its killed off the server dies down a bit, then after a break some other impending doom comes to attack, which leads to the repopulation of the server... It's an endless cycle. Sure maybe you could say its Greencastle, but there wasn't as much time since the last threat, which gave less breathing room... And then the rest of the people are playing LoL

I just think its funny that LAST week, people were talking about how exciting and fresh Arabel looked as the DMs made big changes.
Today, it is DYING and stale and the DMs don't want to make big changes.
I agree, we need more DM coverage, most our DMs are getting hit by RL right now.
However, for 10 years, players told us they wanted more player influence on the setting. They've got it and are now complaining they want more DM influence on the server.
No offense, but some of you clearly have no idea what you want.
Gimme a goddamn pony!
I agree with Moloch.. We just need dms, and players to choose a direction, grab an "im a winner flag" and run towards whatever plot they like most.
it isn't too difficult! Just bother Savn or something. That guy loves being bothered by people who want stuff from him!
The dm's will be back.. Dry spells end. It just takes time.

I don't think anyone said it was stale and the DMs don't want to make big changes

Yall just hate ma faction.
thats it..
.hostile all
-
Id rather the factions at the very least were given a visual (No, not necessarily new fancy uniforms) change, to reflect the resent changes to the setting itself.

I came back to Arabel recently after a hiatus to play a concept with LavishFeast, and we did that, and it went brilliantly - had a lot of fun, did our goal to change the server setting. As it stands now, I'll probably be shifting back into retirement.
Personally, I've played CoA (admittedly rather on-and-off) since 2005, and this has aged my opinion of the server. Personally I don't feel the need to play now, as I'm tired of the market, I'm tired of the city, I'm tired of the same setting after 6 years. This is in no way an attack on the server, it's just that my personal pleasure of playing CoA has diminished due to familarity. I think quite alot of players who don't play anymore think the same. I've seen friends become DMs, watched them DM in person (which spoilt the magic abit, seeing the men behind the curtain) and I've played every angle I think I want to play.
I'd love to see the community reform into something new. I don't think numbers are an issue here, I think actually a small number of hardcore COAers would be benficial to a new setting and ideas, using their abilities and love of our community to forge something new and exciting together. This is how it stands for me currently, and I don't think I'll be back unless Lavish (The lean mean concept machine) flings something my way I find tasty.

That whole "Do-what-EfU-does" and have a drastic change in setting is good in theory, but the DMs have to put alot of time and effort into it and it'll take, literally months.
CoA has been "dying" for years.
-
This thread and other recent ones have made me a sad bunny.
I hear a lot of players who I have respect for saying things like "Everything is Boring now that the lastest flash of excitement has gone" and "I won't be back unless someone else comes up with a new fantastic concept for me to play" and "Come away from CoA to play this other game that I've just found that I think is brilliant"
Ten or fifteen days ago, these same players were driving the server hard in the direction they wanted it to go and now it's gone where their actions have led it and the action has died down, they're fed up. And, what I think is even more cheek, they're suggesting that some of the best CoA players leave CoA and start something new!
Yes, things have slowed a bit, but if everything was high adrenalin action constantly, this server would have lost the battle years ago. Most people cannot funtion at that level for months on end. The DMs are just like us players and need time to asimilate the changes, keep what's good and throw out what's bad.
You can find something new elsewhere easy enough or you can wait for someone with vision to start something new, such as Lavish did with Easthaven, or Kilgrave, or Slime Cult or anything, but please don't denigrate this great server, just because one thing has finished and someone else hasn't kicked off the latest Evil concept to your liking.
BG says it well.
@Broken:CoA has been "dying" for years.
and it's still not dead yet, and in two months time, folks will be sayin "The server has never been so much fun now that Dr Evil's faction is doing…"
-
It isn't CoA that's dying it's NWN.

I was hoping a successor game would come along and reinvigorate the community, but apparently open-ended world creation and PW opportunities aren't what's hot at the moment.

Kill 10 boars is all the rage

CoA is dying! Abandon ship!

There is always one or two people who preach this kind of stuff, and the server always lives on, getting better and better. I am not worried anymore after reading this old post. Some people sound the same today as they did five+ years ago.
I just think RL has snagged alot of people lately, DMs especially, so that makes some folks nervous (especially when DMs don't give any kind of heads up! hint hint)
You'll always find me IG, so no worries. I tried LoL and it was bad, so it won't be sucking me away. I make no promises when Diablo 3/Skyrim come out though…

I imagine it's just RL business.
I can agree with what Fireside said about familiarity reducing interest, but only because I found myself having a lot of fun "properly" exploring places like the ruins, the underdark, haunted halls etc. for the first time. Whichever character I was playing at the time I got pretty obsessed about this exploration of interesting areas. After they've been run through enough times they lose their spark though.
Maybe people are giving it a break, but I'd imagine it's only long enough to let the world become magical again. It's hard to feel inspired walking past the same mysterious prophecies, the same ivory towers and the place or topic that you, with a recent character, already explored to death.
Addndm: I can't think of any game that offers what NWN PWs offer. Maybe EfU and other RP PWs would be contenders for the niche CoA occupies for me, but otherwise it's only a matter of time before I want that enough to somehow cram it in to my day.

It's summer guys. I've got gophers to shoot, and yardwork to do, and a kid to chase, and my wife wants that new screen door installed, and then there's that blue ribbon trout stream just begging for my attention, and…. well you get the idea. It's hard to perch on Coa in the summer man.
