Mount and Musket
-
I've been linking these videos for a few days now in IRC, but in case there's folk that haven't been blessed with this vision I'll talk about it here.
A website I more or less live on, reddit.com featured the following link about five days ago. Team building exercises with the Brandenburgische Artillerie-Brigade. Almost immediately a small community had formed in reddit trying to organize a regiment, and within two to three days, had exploded with over 300 members.
What that video shows is the BAB regiment (aka: clan) running drills in a Mount and Blade: Warband mod called Mount and Musket. It's tremendous fun! Massive battles are organized frequently, by some groups every friday. Just last night, my new reddit group participated in it's first line battle, a massive 200 players. It's not like any other game you've played before. Even the ones that claim teamwork is essential. It goes a step further in this game. Skill at the game is sometimes shown, but usually in melee, and even then, you're only a hit from death. Overall however, real skill is shown in discipline, communication and coordination. There's nothing quite like seeing 100 people performing proper military (for the time) formations, and obeying the commands of only a couple (which by the way, is a terribly stressful and terrifying position).
Here's a few more videos if you're interested.

I'm in the process of forming my own company within the larger brigade I'm apart of (400+ people). I'm one of a handful of our admins and one of our chief officers currently, so if you're at all interested in playing this game in a "serious" way, as the above videos show, let me know.
I'm trying to form my "personal" company primarily East Coast afternoons/evenings as an FYI.

Yeah… this is a little... too geeky...

Yeah, this shit is more like DMing in a place where you pretend to be a character in a fantasy D&D world in an obscure 10+ year old game with creepy men who play chicks over the internet.
-
I see this and I think I need to learn how to fire three rounds a minute in any weather.
-
@HarryMcScary:
That's no where near the level of pretending to be a soldier with a musket and taking orders from creepy men over the internet.
Lol at those random videos. Also I think if you watch the training video of them you'll see they are just acting serious to take the piss ((If not it's still hilarious.))

Ha!
I think this looks cool, I might have a go at some point (although I would need cans of lager in, if its a friday night), just to particpate in it. And yes I admit I am a geek!

Right-o lads! Get in line and pipe down. I see you all there, moustache'd and scrawny looking. You tremble and sniffle before your commanders with nary a tit-whiff of spine in you. The rest of you though, bearded, rowdy and glorious bastards, golw needs you! After a trek into the mountains of Prussia (are there mountains in Prussia?) to picnic on beer only, while making love to sixteen buxom lasses, I was smitten by a vision! At tree-line stood a great grizzly! Catching scent of the spirits and love-making, the bear was driven to a fury and it charged upon us! Leaping to my feet, in nary but the suit I was gifted at birth, I sent the wenches to safety, and engaged the beast in the most burly of nude wrestling. Finding ourselves caught in stalemate, the bear resigned, and rose up to a high stand atop two feet. The beast then spake at me, saying "By the grace of the bear god, I am bettered, hu-man. Your magnificent beard, bare genitals and all 'round overtly manliness has proven me the lesser of us. I gift you this horn of magical properties, which I took in combat from the greatest hunter of the Lost Tribe of the Bearded Savages. The horn will brew upon the face of even the slightest of men, the a lion's mane of chin-hair." Before turning his back to me and taking to the wilds, the monstrous bear gave a warning to "use it with the wisdom of kings".
I have taken the very image; the very spectre of this bear as the moral spirit of my newly formed Company. Thus the Grizzly 95th is born!
Only those of you willing to accept a beard will find place with this company, and even then, only ye manliest of men. Get your kilts ready, you litter-loving dogs, as we'll be wearing them with no shortage of frequency. Join up with the Grizzly 95th today!Company Banner - A horn on a green banner with "95" at center.
Company Symbol - The majestic grizzly bear.
Company Motto - Undecided (It's up to you burly men to come up with something!)I'm looking for a second in command as well as three sergeants. When we're drilling and line battling, only one person will play sergeant at a time, and for the duration of said drill or battle, they'll be under the acting sergeant's orders. That said, we'll rotate the position around between the three and additionally, I'd like to see other folk take up leadership positions simply by being proactive. Note: Proactive doesn't mean disobeying orders.
Forget the word role-play, but I want to see some folk having fun with the game. I like immersion in games, whether it's drilling or line battling, and I'm looking for players that feel the same. Note again, that I'm East Coast, but I can fairly easily play anywhere from noon to late evening. What I'm looking for in players is people who have fun without caring overly much about winning. I want to win and will be trying, but it's less important to me than the spirit of the line battles, the immersion. Unless you're also hilarious or otherwise a pretty cool guy who doesn't afraid of anything, I'm not going to be impressed by how awesome you are at killing people at melee; that just doesn't mean anything to me.
As of now, I'm planning to have open recruitment on one of the servers in the area of 2 or 3pm EST. I'm also going to be joining the Line Battle Friday night, and would love to throw the roster that I fill into it, so I'll be running drills for my men at an hour or two before the actual battle begins (8:30pm I believe), and you're welcome to jump into that one, if you couldn't make the earlier one.
I'll probably do this again on the weekend as well. Let me know who's interested, I want to keep an eye on potential officers within the Grizzly 95th.
