Do NOT bring back Detect Evil on any level. Seriously.

I think Moloch stated quite clearly that this will not take place, ever.
Also, this discussion is going WAAAAAY off topic.

Do what you think your character would do. If you're a paladin, and you think your character would follow his paladin code in the given situation, do that. If not, go against it, and let the DMs consider the consequences.

Detect Evil is a terrible idea. So is thinking a paladin can know when his companions are evil.
The real problem isn't paladins traveling with evil. It is people choosing the evil alignment, but who aren't willing to roleplay that or the kind of fear and hesitancy that an evil person would have near a God-buffed knight sworn to exterminate evil from the world.
I'd want people to keep in mind, paladins are not the only ones who need to watch their comrades. An evil priest of Malar traveling with a paladin may find Malar turning against that priest as well.
Divine classes especially should be aware of these issues.
A simple neutral evil thief traveling with a paladin and hiding his real nature is fine, it can create wonderful conflicts and stories when the thief's nature slowly starts to be discerned over the course of a quest.
A priest of Bane giving blessings to a paladin of Torm should result in both seeing a big frown from their bosses.
