Sellling Hedge Magic.

They are only worth that much if someone's willing to pay it. These things go in cycles, depending on what folks are looking to do. Some reagents will be highly sought for a while, then, you won't be able to give them away. Given how much interest there is in them, makes sense that a subset of characters would work to make money off them.

trading is really fun because it gets you adventuring. C0G did a lot of trading of reagents for its projects. Hey we need that! Okay yeah we got that but we need this in exchange! Okay good! (I'm sure you saw a number of our sending of us hiring for expedition so instead of buying them, we hired folks to help us find some!)
I like the fact someof those reagents are drops from spawns out there, and some are in quests areas. You need to hire people one way or the other to go on those quest and when you cant reach the lvl caps, you have to hire other folks to do it for you.
Some of those reagents should be on lowbie quests too… Gives us a reason to hire new arrivals! Same for high lvl quest. You're too low? Hire big guns for the job! You dont neeed to pay then 200 gold each really. Say you'll pay say extra 50 and they keep all they find and if they find what you want, you pa them a little extra.

I don't like it.
Reasons (personals and subject to my limited play time):
- the result of the use of the reagents is decided by DMs, I doubt that a character who buys five reagents for a ritual will obtain the result hoped for
- for what I see those selling the reagents are a minority and the prices are more or less "set in stone" and cash related (i.e. I sell this for 2k, I fail to see where is the intrigue or the enhanced RP in that)
- usually the reagents (I am not sure because I never pursued any ritual) require certain mechanical power to be obtained and this generates (my view) power-reagent-trains instead of power-quest-trains
- zone of reagent spawns are known by some chars/players which makes the experience of obtaining a reagent less "adventurous"

As long as the reagents were chosen appropriately, this depends entirely on the quality of the ritual rather than how they were gathered.

The reagent was still acquired through adventure, and the gold would have to be acquired through various means (likely questing), so I'm really not seeing the problem here.

Yes, this is a potential problem. It's also irrelevant to the issue of selling reagents, since it's there regardless.

Again, a potential problem, possibly an unavoidable one since the DMs who set this system up randomized things to a certain degree. It's also, again, irrelevant to the issue of selling reagents - even if it were against the rules to sell them, this would still be an issue.

Intrugue is cerainl possible.. just a couple examples..
Bidding wars..
Forces sales via threats or influences (such as Zhents threatening you if you sell it to Red Harts) -

I dont see this at all, because when i am looking to sell reagents the last thing im looking for is gold. i would ask for a favor/something i could use.
Example: i didnt need my petrified wood so i gave it to red moon in exchange for a favor when i need something.
