Your Favourite Fantasy Books
-
Well, I for one am an avid fan of fantasy books, which pretty much got me hooked on the whole genre, part of the reason I enjoy Arabel so much. So I was curious what fantasy (or other genres if you must) books/series other CoAers have enjoyed reading.
Some of my favourites have been;
Raymond E. Feists books (All the ones based on Midkemia/Kelewan), which have possibly been my favourites of all time. I'm not even entirely sure how many times I've reread them all.
Song of Ice and Fire series, which I'm sure many will agree is pretty epic. Looking forward to the next book.
The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, which I found was better in the beginning, is still by far one of my favourite series. Stone of Tears was my favourite book of the series.
Runelords, by David Farland, is one of my favourites because of its unique form of magic, which is somewhat rare to find.
I've got many others, maybe I'll add some later.

I agree with the feist choice once again thanks to listen4silence for showing me the way. I also enjoy most of the 40k + warhammer novels with the slayer and commisar cain series ranking among my fav and also the city watch stories.
-
Harry Potter :D
I'm also a big of the Gotrex and Felix novels too. There some excerlent charactrisation and battle discriptions in there.
-
The First two Shanara series.
Xanth
Magic Kingdom:For sale: Sold! -
Never did read many books, have not read a book for a very long time now.
However, I did enjoy 'The Animorphs', even though the ending was horrible. Now you know why I play a druid!
Though Im sure there are far better books out there than that.

The First two Shanara series
Ohh, forgotten them! Really enjoyed them when I read them years ago. I must try and pick up a copy of them.
- Raymond E Feist "Magician" then Kelewan "Empire" Series. A few others as well. I'm on my third copy of Magician. The others have fallen apart through use and dropping in the bath!
- Robert Jordan "Wheel of Time" - When is it going to end!!!!
- David Eddings "Elenium", "Belgariad" and "Mallorean" series. The prose and plot is a bit basic but I do still keep coming back and reading them.
- J. K. Rowling "Harry Potter" Series.
-
another 'vote' for Feist's books, also I like Pratchett's discworld. Hennen's Elfen books were a good read, not sure if there's an English translation (wikipedia says "Many of his books especially his Die Elfen-Saga are translated and published in all major European countries except Great Britain.", but the original Klingon^WGerman version was no problem for me to read, thanks to a (misspent?) youth watching subtitled German Krimi's.
I enjoyed Niven's SciFi stories, perhaps I should pick up his Fantasy too.

don't read as much as i used to but as a youngster i liked feist, the shannara books, tolkien of course, dragonlance, death gate cycle…i really should reread some of these because other than tolkien, i can barely remember the stories

The First two Shanara series.
Yeah after that they got shit. Wish they'd do something other than blue sparks >_>
But Harry potter is a win for me and of course who could forget the Night angel trilogy by Brent weeks. Epic stuff.
-
Cleric Quintet series
Wheel of Time series
Lord of the Rings, Hobbit
More on the sci-fi part, anything by Robert HeinleinHubby's reading the Night Angel series and says it's very good.

A Song of Ice and Fire
Discworld
Dune

i forgot wheel of time…i stopped reading after about book nine because it seemed like jordan was just taking the piss...how's it going now?
-
Jordan died, someone else is finishing the last bit I think. Another reason I prefer completed, shorter books like lord of the rings over these new long running series.

Glen Cook - Tales of the Black Company (and his myriad other works).
Steven Erikson - Malazan Book of the Fallen.
Everything by Michael Moorcock.
Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle.
Selected works by Umberto Eco: The Name of the Rose/The Island Of The Day Before/Baudolino.

Prachett's "Discworld" circle
-
Black Company
*Star Wars books (up to the New Zahn's books)
*Song of Fire and Ice (tho only read the "main cycle" by far)
*Amber

Tolkien of course is on my list. The lord of the rings is the standard for fantasy.
Harry Harrison. The stainless steel rat is one of my favorites.
Isaac Asimov. Foundation series.
Piers Anthony. Some of the Xanth stories were good.
The Complete Enchanter series. The author isn't coming to mind at the moment…Stuff from the 40's, but some of that old stuff was very well written.
Gordoon R. Dickson. The Dragon and the George.
Stephen R. Donaldson. The Cronicles of Thomas Covenant.
I know some of this falls more in the realm of Scifi, but good stories none the less. There are so many more I could list... I'll stop now!
Edit: I stopped too soon. I forgot David Eddings. The Belgariad and the Mallorean have to be in here.
