Major Changes to the "Crafting System"
-
The DM Team wants to formally announce that we expect to implement a major change to the "crafting system" in the next month. This will entail an entirely new system focused on providing additional options for customizing your gear; both its powers and its appearance.
There are a few issues with the old crafting system that the DMs have never really been pleased with.
1). The need to 'grind' in order to gain raw materials and to 'craft' them through multiple crafting attempts.
The new system will instead reward you for going out to explore dangerous places and for going on scripted adventurers.
2). The old system was too tied into levels. If you wanted to craft something great, you had to be a higher level.
The new system will essentially allow anyone to customize their gear, there may still be some rolls involved (we're not completely set on this yet though-there may be no rolls at all).
3). The old system created very bland items, very predictable items–and often very powerful items.
The new system will have several thousand different combinations of powers and abilities that can be added to items. There will be three tiers of 'powers and abilities' that can be added to items. Some that create random flaws with the item (of varying power) and some that create no flaws at all; this will allow us to allow more powerful items that we currently do–but compensate that for introducing random flaws to the items (or if you get very lucky, no flaw at all).
4). The old system was complicated. It often took awhile to get the hang of it, or have someone explain it to you and frequently caused major lag.
The new system is extremely easy, streamlined, and lag free too because it uses two scripts as opposed to several dozen.
We're still working out a few details about the new system, and introducing a few features we want. It'll take us roughly a month (maybe more, we can't promise) to get everything finished (although a great deal of it is already thanks to help from the player community-I'll name you specifically when its all done so no one harasses you for spoilers now).
We wanted to let players know this so that people would not be creating characters built around the old crafting system. That said, a few points if you are a current crafter.
1). We are not removing Scribe Scroll, Brew Potion, or Craft Wand at this time. They may change in the nature they work though.
2). We are happy to LETO or help people built around crafting weapons, armor, and enchanting items to rebuild their characters without these feats if you choose to do so. Although, maybe this is even a good time to consider a new and fresh concept! We have exciting factions available!
Some errata before you need to ask.
1). There is still no plan to introduce Craft Traps at this time.
2). You can still customize armor/clothing appearances; but that doesn't mean you'll be able to add the 1.69 robes--reason being that it still allows for the option of Full Plate that looks like you're wearing a wizard's robe (but maybe we can find a way around that).
3). Everyone will be able to dye their own armor now, not just "tailors" or "armor smiths".
4). Yes, I really said there will be literally thousands of new combinationsof powers and abilities you can put on your gear. Just as a small spoiler, playing around with the system I made a Longsword that gave me +1 DEX, +3 Intimidation, +2 AB vs Elfs, cast Bless Once/Day, and -6 to Move Silently and Hide In Shadows.
5). This system will still allow people to portray Player-Character merchants, but instead of making and selling the items, I anticipate it will turn into more of a secondary market on goods since now players are free to customize their own gear through their adventures.

Just a reminder that these changes are coming soon.
-
After a brief delay caused by an entirely unforeseen bug, the system is now operating bug free.
This means that all that is left to implement it is the creation of a number of specific items that will be unique to the crafting system.
I wouldn't mind a volunteer who can follow simple directions to do this in the toolset. All they would need to do is place different variables on items in the toolset. So very, very basic knowledge of the toolset will be necessary.
-
A couple more volunteers would speed this up even more. There's quite a few blue prints to make.
If you volunteer, include your e-mail address in the PM.
-
A few volunteers were unable to get to the stuff we needed done, and I've yet to contact a few other volunteers since it takes me about 15 minutes to write out the directions on everything.
I could still use another handful of volunteers. Just an FYI: really have a good basic understanding of the toolset–you should at least know the basics of Edit and Edit Copy and setting variable integers when making items.
-
Hey all, I want to thank those who did some work on this so far. I've been swamped with college lately, so even getting the directions to people who have time to make the blueprints for me hasn't been something I can do.
This system will go in eventually! I just need much more free time than I have.
-
It's taken a lot longer than we planned, but this is moving forward and the scripts for the new customization system are going in–the old crafting system will soon begin to stop working.

The old crafting system is not working. There may be bugs with potion or wand crafting, please alert us if you find them. Nothing else will work reliably. Just don't try!
