A request from an old bastard about the CoA attitude
-
Well, to start things off, I am doing my best to clear my schedule to return to this fabled establishment. However, since I have only been on the forums and on Irc for the last 4 months I have a serious request to my once more fellow players.
Please stop speaking of CoA as if it is the newest patch to WoW. From what I have seen in the last few months, and this is of course a clearly subjective point of view, yet one that has been made from a distance…
There is WAY too much talk amongst the players about "CoA Mechanics", and it leads me to believe that the focus point of the players state of mind is moving more and more away from the roleplaying aspect and into the "Lets try and win CoA with our leet builds, our gimped yet somehow optimized parties."
What I mean by this? A "warrior" type character is no longer referred to as a frontliner, but is now only known as "Tank" or "Damage Dealer". There is more and more discussions about "optimal parties", whining about "nerfing" classes, about how its not fair that you cant tumble in a fullplate any longer, and all sorts of other discussions.
The dms change the mechanics to keep the server balanced. Which is awesome. But should every single change amount to 10 pages of discussions?
Id love that focus was returned, not from the dms, but from the players' attitudes, to discussions of how best to portray character weaknesses or strengths, how to utilize feats, classes and skills in order to best portray a personality and a character.
More discussions of characters and less about "concepts".
I know especially many of the long term players here, I know for a fact that their roleplaying skills alone can steal a whole night from a person who has an important exam the next day. And I have been awed by the many new comers through the years who have the same ability.
But for every discussion about optimal mechanics, about how the feat Improved Expertise is a silly battle tactic from an optimal point of view, I get put off more and more of returning here.
There are many more examples of how the language is changing, this was only the biggest one which annoys me to no end.
Sorry for the rant.

Ew. You're ranting.

As another recently returning player (albeit a lesser known, lesser respected one) I've noticed the same thing. Wasn't planning to complain about it, but just thought I'd add my +1 to your comments.

hi wats this about//?
I don't see the point in this thread. Get involved, get IG and MAN UP OLOUTH before I come to Denmark and drink you silly
-
All your characters have been optimised Olouth, though you've not sunk to the depraved pit of powergaming that Jagged lives in, at least.

Pfft.
That comes from you?

Deadlock always makes me feel so dirty.

Did you know more people are killed by donkeys annually than are killed in plane crashes?

I'd like your tank in my buffbot.

WoW just introduced new lingo that has carried over. It's hard to escape from WoW and all the media that surrounds it. The RP is still in CoA and I don't think mechanics have taken over entirely (or even a little). In fact, the IRC #coacharacters channel discusses concepts, weaknesses, RP tips and all sorts of ways to get involved IC in the server (unlike the #COA channel with the cyb0r). Too bad more people don't visit it.
-
Is that thinly veiled criticism against the cyb0r?

I think it's the termonology that's changed, and while I'm not a huge fan of most of it (Calling a fighter a Tank for instance makes my ears bleed) there's very few players who make min-maxed half orcs or strange powerbuilds any longer. It's usually just the same four or five people over and over again.

Did you know the average pencil can draw a line 35 miles long?

make a character and get IG or stop fussing. [/mom-mode]

Next you'll be telling me that Muffin the mule is a criminal offence.

In my day, rants meant something. Play game, ignore IRC, and OOC forums and you'll find your life is a lot more fulfilling.
-
You guys have spelled "wow" wrong. It's wow, not WoW.

Oh, it is not in any way targetting the IG aspect. When I last logged in, i was amazed at how high the RP standard is. But the whole tank business is making me feel old and dirty, and none of them in the good "uhhh, those young girls look hawt" way.

I am doing it as fast as i can!

There should be more ten plus pages about how talking about mechanics is bad for the server, rather than pages talking about just mechanics.
Oh…wait. That's silly.
A wise man once said, "If you want to make a change, take a look in the mirror".
Then he offered me some candy and a ride on his personal roller coaster.
