NPC involvement, DM events
-
Hey Guys,
I've noticed a trend for PCs to run to NPCs with plots, looking for handouts or asking for events from DMs. Just wanted to let you guys know, this trend needs to come to a screeching halt.
For example, going to a DM saying "I want to find artifacts" is basically telling them to come up with stuff for you. Going to a DM saying "hey, I made up this artifact, this is the history, this is why I want to find it, but it also does this, so this group will likely want to stop me from finding it." is more likely to be noticed, because you're reducing our work in having to concept a storyline by doing it yourself. Running stuff that you created is much easier for us than having to create new stuff for you.
Get creative, use the resources of the module itself to your advantage instead of asking for new stuff to be added, like areas or items. Make up interesting stories and use areas, quests and the like to tell them in an interesting fashion. This will be 10000% more likely to get you a DM than going to an NPC and asking for plots to be handed to you. Don't ask DMs to run stuff for you without proper IG setup to make it happen. There's so much stuff in the module you can use to support your stories. Use your imagination.
NPCs have much more important stuff to do than worry about what your problems are. If you can't think of any way to avoid going to an NPC to figure something out, at the very least make sure that you do something to impress the NPC enough to get them to notice you and grant you a favor, which you can use to get information or otherwise progress your stuff. Obviously, it's a case by case scenario, for something major an NPC might just involve himself voluntarily, but you get the idea.
DM time is a precious resource, and is to be treated accordingly. Come to DMs with complete stories and ideas to progress existing ones, don't expect them to be given to you.
Players can of course, play what they want, how they want; If you're having fun as you are, then great! But understand that in the same vein, DMs are also entitled to spend time with and reward what they find fun and involving, and ideas that have potential to impact more than just one PC. Do not take DM attention for granted.
