Is it more evil to let someone continue wrecking havoc and chaos to save one life, or to let them escape and possibly kill or harm or torture several more?

Well actually:
The sin of murder is on the murderer. It is exactly 0% evil to let the hostage die in Faerunian morality, assuming your standard mexican standoff style hostage situation. It's also not evil to let them escape and harm/torture other people by the same token.
That said, a good person might still be very likely to not want their friend dead, because that's their friend and it's hard to be friends with dead people. Also you have to take paladins into account, because their actions are determined by a lot more than just alignment.
-
tbh Just saying "Let them die, I will just raise them later" is very lame if you ask me and ruin a lot of the thrill of the game.

< optimism > I have seen hostage situations work, including ones stretching over days. I have seen blackmail or hurt someone physically work. I have seen emotional blackmail work. I have seen FDs where the (evil) winners informed a bystander wandering by (me) to take the body back, and give the deader's belongings to their next of kin. I've seen very powerful evils beat down a party, tie them up and drag them to near the city.
All such actually serve to increase RP, increase immersion, increase fun, etc < /optimism >< pessimism >all the excuses of "it never works" for things such as this are just that, excuses. It's usually just easier to kill someone and loot them. Especially gratifying since when people die now, their stuff doesn't drop, so you don't "inherit" things if someone dies, leaving FD/loot as the means to get nice loot if you dont earn it yourself. < /pessimism >

I'The Sheriffs constantly had to deal with hostages. Sometimes we'd get the bad guys by surprise and win. Other times, we just had to pay up. DM factions are there for a reason. 10,000 Lyons for a purple dragon officer….if no recuse is possible, the crown tends to caugh up. But it also means you are basically KOS. So yeah. Have fun with that shit.
I mean that in a positive way. Have fun!

I want to bump this.
And underline it.
IF YOU ARE PARTICIPATING IN A FD EVENT, YOU ARE SUBJECT TO (and deserve) FD.

Blackmail and dead threats CAN work wonders. Ask Redgallant, who had my character in the palm of her hand, using such tricks. It was some of the most thrilling rp I have ever had.

I am bumping this thread for visibility. Citizenbane makes some very good points on how to roleplay PvP. Along with some other posters.
-
This needs another bump, and a discussion on PvP courtesy.
When a player spares you from a full death, there is a certain obligation to not immediately screw them over for acting in a way that was courteous to your character.
-
I agree that this need to be bumped, as PvP courtesy works both ways.
You must know that any actions your character takes can have it own consequences.
