Elite : Dangerous
-
damn you! [has to go download now]
-
Yeah but, you wanna get Horizons instead! it's the expansion pack, which includes the original game too.
-
If I understand correctly you get 10$ off the price of the expansion if you own the original game, correct me if I'm wrong.
So if you only want to try out Elite you can buy the discounted version now and in the end you'll only end up losing 2$Also just downloading Elite myself, I'll post my name here later :)
-
The above is true.
ALSO, if you own the First Season (Elite: Dangerous) and THEN get the second (Horizons) then you can also buy the Cobra Mark 4 once Horizons comes out. It's a loyalty bonus. (you still gotta earn the redits in game to buy it, though.)
Also, just so new people don;t need to scroll up. My commander name in Elite is Novo Mundus

1 pound is 1.51 dollars or 1.425 euros. So if you get elite for 12,5 euro on steam while on discount, and horizons for 45 (29,99 pounds), you pay 57.
Or you buy horizons and actually pay 60ish. Sounds cheaper to try elite and if you like it get Horizons expansion. At least if you dont like it you save the expansion cost…EDIT: Commander name Samar Khazid ... yeah using old CoA characters felt right at the moment. I have no regrets...
-
horizons doesnt look like it is on steam.
it looks like it is a planetary exploration thing, most suited to dedicated players rather than those playing for 'fun'?
-
It adds more than that, the first part of the season includes the ability to land on airless worlds, and drive your surface recon vehicle around, there are stations, and defence systems, and base assault things. Plus you can find "Materials" which can be used to synthesise more powerful ammunition, or super fuel so you can jump larger distances, along with some other things. It will be perfect for people who just want to play for "fun" as you'll be able to land on planets and drive an ARV about shotting stuff up and raiding bases.
Horizons is a whole season though, it's not just the one expansion, it's everything next year which includes character customisations, multi crew, launching fighters from your large ships fighter bay, and a bunch of other things.
-
Also, the reason horizons isn't on steam is because it isn't out yet (The beta is out on monday), but you can pre-order it direct from Frontier Developments.
This explains some more probably.

nothing helps you to dock it seems, and also no idea how to, or where to go atm.

Watched the youtube video gowl posted. It looks amazing, and I am considering it. What would I need to play? and how much time investment shoudl I be looking at? Same as CoA? Do can it be played with a mouse, or do I need a joypad or some such to get the full feel of it?
-
It can be played with pretty much any control system you want, they designed the game that way specifically. Works well with X-Box game pads, HOTAS joysticks, keyboard and mouse, and a plethora of other crazy systems including VR headsets "voice attack" and track IR.
You can just jump onto CQC (Close quareters combat) and pew pew with other commanders for fun if you have little time to play, or you can play the main game, run a couple missions, or bounty hunt a little, pirate something, go mining, exploring, or engage with "Power play" which is kind of like an inter system game of risk with NPCs you can pledge allegiance to. You can play in solo, private group, or open modes depending on if you want to just chill on your own without the potential for combat, just play with a few friends specifically (or join one of the large private groups) or go all out in open and expect the un-expected.
You can pick it up and put it down when you want. You only NEED to invest time if your obsessed with "grinding credits" which you shouldn't be, as over time you'll amass them anyway, and it's fun from the sidewinder up to the Anaconda.

Also join #CoAElite on IRC in case of questions.

The game is $15 on Steam right now. Was thinking of picking it up.
How is the exploring aspect of the game? I know there are oodles of systems, but how many are actually unexplored at the moment? Is it worth it to focus on exploration? -
Well I have not explored much, but depends on how much you like astronomy. Exploration aspect is a bit lacking to be honest. As for unexplored systems, just pick a direction out of civilised space, and you ll find what you seek, place is huge. People tend to spend weeks exploring, then return and sell their data, but its a lonely process.
Basically you go from star system to system, scan, get close to planets if you find any interesting ones (water atmosphere, supporting life for instance) and scan the surface, then move on…
There are also alien artifacts and the occasional puzzle-riddle developers through in.
Some love it, some hate it. I like the bounty hunting and smuggling aspect more.
-
Currently the players have explored about 0.1% of the systems in the game.
-
It might be 0.01% I don't remember
There are 400 billion systems
-
bought a new ship, bought some guns.
shooting things up is fun.
