Assassination
-
i recently made a rouge with the express purpose of taking assassin at lvl 6 in order to assassinate people with death attack. seems i cant take prestige classes with DM approval :). How would i go about getting that approval considering that without death attack its going to be difficult to kill anyone unless their lvl 1 or something silly. I want to be able to creep around in the shadows and then stun my target. To this end i was also hoping to take a lvl of shadow dancer aswell.
Any suggestions?

You can very well assassinate people at level 5. Even if their level is much higher. If caught unaware, you can take even on high level casters. But my guess would be you'd do better to ask DMs how to get PrC approval.
Death attack + HiPS sounds like extra cheese though. :D -
Earning a PrC is about creating intrigue and adventure, not about mechanics. Earning a double PrC on CoA is not going to happen.
An assassin would have to achieve the reputation of a master assassin and receive training in order to earn the PrC.
-
Or kill people for money. PCs and NPCs are fair game after all.
-
I actually find Assassins are hard to play in CoA. Mainly because PvP events where someone actually dies aren't too common enough. Knocking someone out doesn;t scream Assassin to me, you have to kill people. I suppose you can make an Assassin killing important NPC's, but remember that killing Important NPC's isn't walking into the Tymoran Shrine and clicking attack on the poor dude standing there. Like others have said, its less about mechanicaly make a killbot, and more about making this Assassin intruiging. Why does he Assassinate? Who are his primary Targets? Would there be any quirks about him, like calling cards?
-
While mechanically great, this character build would be a bit over the top for CoA. It's all about the fun your creating for others as well as for yourself after all.

sounds like a monk.

Unfortunately, assassin concepts are generally frowned upon and feared by the playerbase, but it really doesn't have to be like that. Assassination is part of the game, and in a politics-heavy server it's actually a really fun concept to play.
My advice to you:
Have your assassin be really great at networking. What I mean by that is that he should have friends everywhere- high and low places. If you're friends with everyone it's that much easier to betray them and catch them unawares. Victims feel a little bit better if they know the assassin in question.
Be stylish- Assassins are sexy and the best are portrayed that way. Leave a calling card, and act like you're the best assassin there is. (Even if you know you're not.)
Charge a lot of money for an assassination. You're a rogue and PvP against certain foes is not easy for you. A human life is worth at least 5000 gold. Charge 6000 for people with reputations and 8000-10000 for the big fish.
Use Poison. Test new Poisons on yourself. Know what it does. It actually works because one of the assassin's abilities is an immunity to poison- probably due to developing a resistance. Make contacts with poison and contraband dealers- There are some really powerful poisons out there- some don't do much, but others will completely destroy a char's con or str score. Some even kill on hit.
Use your use magic device skill. Wands and magical items will give you an edge over your opponent, namely the tougher combatants like barbarians and fighters. They can also potentially improve your saves against spellcasting opponents.
If possible, use traps.
Use your lockpicking skill to lock doors and trap your opponents.
Very basically, you are a rogue with a wide array of skills and abilities- if you use them all in tandem, you can kill most opponents in single combat- just don't play fair. Play dirty.
EDIT/AFTERTHOUGHT: To earn an assassin prestige class, kill a few people for money and send an app in letting the dms know what you want to accomplish with the prestige class and why you'd need it. Decent reasons would probably include a desire to eliminate one or some of the most powerful leaders in or around Arabel- just give a good reason why you want them dead too. One assassin can change the course of the game.

I may have the facts a bit wrong, but in the not so distant past a level 6-ish rogue assassinated (on contract) a PC Tychean priest (level 8-ish? Not sure)
While he was delivering a sermon.
In the Lady's House.
With a poisoned shuriken.
And he escaped.
Like people said, it's about playing dirty. Sticking around to see your victim die is one way of doing it - not the only way.
-
Must have been a really low con priest. :D
-
You'd actually be surprised. Some poisons are rare for a reason.
-
I used the same poison on a level 9 barbarian and he died too! The point being that there's a lot of ways to assassinate someone without having the assassin class.
-
Did someone suggest to experiment with poisons on himself?
Lol? -
"I spent the last 7 years developing a resistance to iocane powder."
EDIT: Nobody likes it when you're snarky, mister.
-
Goddamn it Petey, now I wanna make an Assassin :D
-
I once had a lvl 7 rogueish Halfling, who -almost- killed two much higher lvl characters, simply by catching them off guard.
Hells, I was once killed by the infamous Kale, infront of -all- of my most powerful allies, before any of them managed to react. I was lvl 10 at the time.
-
A follow-up on the immense charging of gold for killing people- It's kind of cool to have an assassin who's willing to put a price on someone's life, but recognizes that it's a human life they're taking. In fact if you give them an almost reverent outlook on life, you can give them a very compelling personality.

To think of it.. Assassins with a strong religious dogma sound like a badass idea. Think Jaqen Hgar from Game of thrones.
-
The trick is that they still have to be a cold-blooded killer.
-
Why cold blooded?
Why not an assassing who, afterwards, wrings his hands in remorse and then goes and prays for the souls of his victims?
