Spreading Known Information
-
Hey guys.
How would it be best for the DMs to spread around information in game regarding well known events, such as the Red Hart / Legion battle at Castle Crag?
You might have seen I've been changing the intro text to areas of the module to reflect things going on - how else could it be done?
Do people speak to random commoners to hear rumors still, worth changing those to reflect?
Ideas welcome!
-
Town criers (or just sendings with latest news).
Maybe IG message boards too. -
NPCs, rather than just text. The Darmos preacher outside the Lady's House is a great addition. It wouldn't hurt to give him a brief conversation explaining who Darmos is, and why people believe Tymora is dead.
Things like that are the best way in my opinion. Visual aids rather than blocks of text, much more interesting.
-
Edit/revise the rumors scripts that the npcs spout off. That'd be a good way to randomly insert secret plot info and actually give purpose to the random walk about npcs, too.
-
To expand on lizard's and my own ideas, what about faction/district/allegiance specific npcs.
Town criers for Kresswell and Sheriffs, heralds for Harts, street prophets or rumormonger for the Slums and so on. Make them convey general news plus add something faction specific. -
Books or other forum information (apart from the "IG rumors").
So that those of us who have little time to stay IG can get the relevant informations in the forums.
-
I think a combination of all of the above would work!
-
Id second Lizards idea.
I don't talk to commoners but the preacher I approached and spoke with as it stood out, more things like this would be good. -
Too many preachers would spoil it I think.
What about ''named'' NPCs, would people approach them rather than ''Commoner''?
-
I would approach an npc if something about him catches an eye.
For example a squire or herald wearing Harts tabard at Western market. Or a town crier wearing a livery in colors of house Kresswell who walks around the district, shouting recent news or missives from the govnt. More or less every npc in distinctive uniform placed out of his usual habitat draws attention. -

Maybe also add a thread on the forums labeled "Herald" or the like that is DM post only. Every time the NPCs statements are changed it is added to the Herald thread. This is a nice way to track it on the forums as well as record a sort of history of the server.
-
Isn't this sort of thing basically covered by the rumours section?
-
Not really. The rumors section is great, however anyone can post in it. While 99% of the posts (if not 100%) are well done and informative, everyone posting in there tends to create a lot of information to wade through. Some of that information is perhaps not applicable to larger over all story arc. The rumors thread servers one purpose, the point of the DM only Herald thread is to provide a (relatively) concise series of postings on major server issues. A sort of TL;DR version of the rumors section focused only on server altering events.

I really believe there should be less "forum roleplay" and more emphasis on hands-on IG experience.
That's why i like this DM initiative so much. -

I didn't mean to say that IC forum section wasn't useful. It's great when you don't have much time to play, but want to stay tuned to current events.
But if a player chooses to visit forums less frequently and spend more time IG, he shouldn't find himself at a disadvantage. -
I enjoy city rumours/gossipers a lot! They're great to listen to, and also cause dialogues where they are.

Im with fish on this i try to do as much as i can in game it's not that i don't read the forums but i play the game to have fun and i would much rather not have to read the forums at all to play it,for my first month of playing here I never even looked at them, why would i there were in game notice boards players to speak to and find things out from, now it seems most of the game is played here…
To me thats a very bad thing. -

I want players to be able to find out as much stuff going on in game as on the forums.
More ideas plzzzz.
