Remove Reagent Cost for Polishing Oil
-
Currently making a polishing oil requires one lesser reagent. At my current subrace tax this is 13 gold. To buy polishing oil outright from the gem store is 12 gold with ye ole subrace tax. Making polishing oil requires first digging up a bunch of sand to make vials, then also mixing more stuff to make the oil itself. It's already extra work to make over just buying the oil. I'd argue the extra work covers the 13 gold cost so to speak. Gems have to be enchanted anyway in order to be used in any crafting and that is a VERY expensive gold sink as it is. Just a thought. Not a priority by any means.

when i did the calculations it came out 10gp to make and 13gp to buy polishing oil (originally the price was 13g, it got lowered at some point... but the recipe did not get adjusted.). i did not account for subraces getting higher prices (not sure that existed at the time). mostly people were making it to build up their skills both with alchemy (making the oil) and gem-crafting (polishing gems) rather than buying it and only building up the one skill of gem-crafting. two birds, one stone.
Current recipe costs:
item qty cost Lesser Reagent 1 10 Vial 3 18 bag of sand 1 3 TOTAL COST 31 Quantity produced 3 Cost per item 10.33 These numbers do not account for subraces, however. You can cut the cost somewhat by digging up your own sand instead of buying it. And by making your own vials instead of buying them. (another craft, yes, i'm aware).
I've adjusted the recipe to use 3 vials and yield 3 oils (it was set at 2 vials and 1 oil which was a bug).
if i remove the need for the reagent then i would also adjust the number produced
Option 1
item qty cost Lesser Reagent110Vial 1 6 bag of sand 1 3 TOTAL COST 9 Quantity produced 1 Cost per item 9 Option 2
item qty cost Lesser Reagent110Vial 2 12 bag of sand 1 3 TOTAL COST 15 Quantity produced 2 Cost per item 7.5 HOWEVER ... it is
alchemy
, so it sorta should require alchemical reagents, but I am willing to remove them and replace with one of the two options above.Note: simply lowering the cost of the reagent would affect every recipe that uses it which becomes more complicated (imo).
thoughts?

If it makes 3 oils then it works. The cost comes out to essentially a little over 1/3 the cost of buying the oils outright.

if you wish to keep a base material we need to buy, perhaps replace the lesser alchemical oil for hazelnut oil? I think we cannot make it anymore and I see it in the alchemy shop. I don't think it is used at all anymore. Could use it for polishing oil?
For subraces, it costs 3 gold.
Polishing oil is around 13 gold for subrace.
Lesser regent: 13
vial: 7
sand: 31 hazelnut oil + 1 vials + 1 sand: 13 - 13 gold per oil. - same price to buy it...
1 hazelnut oil + 2 vials + 1 sand: 20 / 2 - 10 gold per oil. - save 3 gold per.
1 hazelnut oil + 3 vials + 1 sand: 27/ 3 - 9 gold per oil. - save 4 gold per.Checked with a regular race with no appraise, polishing oil is 10 gold now. And hazelnut oil is also 3 gold.
1 hazelnut oil + 1 vials + 1 sand: 12 - 12 gold per oil. - over the cost so not worth it.
1 hazelnut oil + 2 vials + 1 sand: 18/ 2 - 0 gold per oil. - save 1 gold per.
1 hazelnut oil + 3 vials + 1 sand: 24/ 3 - 8 gold per oil. - save 2 gold per.Seems like you option 2 is better for both race and subrace. But they can make the item for free if they get sand and make vials (sand and coal).
