Tactical Project: Eastern Marches Blockade
Introduction:
The path between Hillmarch, our gateway to Tilverton from the North east, is buffered by the Eastern Marches. While these marches are protected by an ever deteriorating ward against planar activity is not enough to fully ward of such creatures presence in the area - Thus contributing to other dangers of going through it. Both for us and more importantly to Tilverton.
the Eastern Marches are divided into three major areas:
Shield Meadow:
Ruins:
Wondergrange:
Tactical recommendations:
There is a forming plan by Apprentice Iverlesk that seeks to meddle with the ancient wards themselves, which could lead to one of two outcomes:
- The Ward is strengthened and no outsider presence is evident in the Eastern marches
- The Ward collapses unleashing a multitude of outsider armies on the Eastern marches
The first outcome will make the Eastern marches relatively safe for travel, which means Tilverton can use it as means of escape or worse - Get behind our siege forces and attack Arabel directly. The second outcome will put the entire region at risk from an even worse enemy than the Duke.
Additionally meddling with the Ward, cannot be done by just anyone forcing us to spend precious coffers and supplies. We will need to continue spending then supplies and manpower to secure the Marches - Which looking at our rosters, I doubt we have.
It would be my recommendation to leave the Ward unmolested, against the recommendation of Apprentice Iverlesk.
Instead I would recommend we make use of the terrain of the Eastern Marches to block any escape or troop advancement through it and into Hillmarch. That can be accomplished by collapsing bridges and ravines and create a natural barrier. With the continued presence of Outsiders in the region, it would be hard for Tilverton to clear the passage for reuse. It will also allow us to maintain the siege on Tilverton with greater ease, worrying about one less direction or at the very least not having to allocate to it monumental efforts.
We can approach this in the following way:
-
Erect a dam between the Wondergrange and the Ruins, drying up the water flow into the Wondergrange. Enemy troops will need to get through the dam and risk flooding their armies in the process. We can also utilize the dam to flood approaching armies ourselves. It would also have the added bonus of reducing the water supply of Tilverton, which will contribute to the effectiveness of our seige
-
Collapse the bridges around the Abandoned mill in the Ruins area
-
Collapse the ravine passage in the Ruins area that leads to the Shadow Meadow

The idea for the ward was suggested by Dame Drakesbane. As I have said whilst costly I believe the benefit of reclaiming a large amount of swathe for the kingdom outweighs the initial cost
I presume it would be enacted -after- we siege Tilverton thus the chances of them being able to move forces elsewhere are slim.
Your idea denies this land being reclaimed and I presume we will not be able to do it afterwards as the resources will be used elsewhere thus leaving them infested with fiends

Based on your maps, could we just not heavily barricate the entrance from the Wonder range side to prevent Tilvertons access from that route rather than trying to dam the water and risk flooding the ruins in hopes that the Tilverton forces break the dam to flood themselves?

This plan has merit, if we simply wish to deny access to our land's via the eastern marches.
It will focus the conflict on Griffin Hill and our forces not to have to worry about sortie is coming from the region. It is also much, much cheaper on our coffers.
The status quo in the region will largely remain the same however, and the arch mages schedule may not permit us to make use of his service in the near future to resolve the regions instability in terms of planar shenanigans.
I await Glendur's proposal then we put it to a vote.
