Could somebody explain how this works exactly? I seem to heal different amounts from 8 hp up to full health without changing my discipline.

Based on a random roll, which includes your Discipline score in the final total.
In the future, there are two simple rules to remember:

NO SPITTING.

DO NOT CROSS MISTER MOLOCH.
