Just a little rant. Something that has been a while coming that I wanted to mention.

      bids her head

Yes, it sounds good. I'm pretty sure we all think we know it means something like "nods" or "dips" but does it really? No.

At least not that I can find in any definition.

Yes, you can bid someone good day. That is a verbal greeting not a physical action.

Here is a decent list of possible definitions.

What are your thoughts? Am I alone in this?

When you get mad, do you queue your eyebrows? Perhaps, like my mom, you just haggle your teeth to show distress.

Well… I mean... I'd have to be really mad.

I believe it is a term for a subtle dipping of the head that is held for maybe a second before the head is returned to its normal position.

It is often a sign of respectful acknowledgement between equals.

A nod is normally performed with more speed, and the head will generally traverse a greater distance.

Yes it is assumed to mean that, no it does not mean that. (points at the OP)

The closest meaning is a verbal greeting.

                              language changes.

If the majority take that meaning from it, then that is what the word means.

I think you're alone in this. "Bid your head" is the non-verbal way of saying hello, whereas "nod your head" acknowledges and/or approves of one's presence.

                                Whatever.

Let's rant about how I am the only one doing high level quests anymore. Or how people end their sendings with their name as if writing a letter. I feel rant energy should go to that.

                                :D

Yes, most languages change over time. Some have that problem to a lesser degree because there's an official version.
But that doesn't mean that we can assign any meaning to any word and use the change of language as an excuse.

About people ending sendings with their name: since there's probably a few thousands people in the city, and because of this probably about twenty people with voices that are pretty much indistinguishable from your character's, there's some need to inform people who made a particular sending.

wishes Harry was back to scowl his arm at you

Just use "dips her head in acknowledgement" if that is what you mean. Really. Its quite descriptive and a real word.

Its just a pet peeve, take it as you will.

My main goal here was education. Perhaps those that "bid" didn't really know what it did or did not mean and would like to know.

I don't mind people bidding as many heads as they want.

'Meh' on the other hand… I could really do without that word.
