Net Neutrality
-
Most of you probably already know that cable giants like Comcast and Verizon are currently lobbying to end net neutrality, which means they'll start making people pay up for 'fast lanes' on the internet, and anyone who can't afford it is left in the dust. Considering how these cable companies are so warm and cozy with everyone in Washington D.C., there's a very good chance this will follow through. Industries like Netflix, Etsy, Reddit, and Tumblr are all voicing their disagreement with the concept. You can learn more about it here: https://www.battleforthenet.com/
The FCC has already stated they'll make a decision by the end of the year.
-
Considering the current chairman of the FCC worked for (and then later was in charge of) a lobbying group for telecommunication corporations, this is basically a done deal. The wolf has been hired to guard the sheep.
-
Please write your local congressmen and senators. Netflix is pushing back hard, along with several others.
-
Yes, this utterly sucks, various organisations are fighting it. Don't give up on it as a done deal, or it is.
-
I havent heard of this, is it a US thing?
-
It's global, but much of it is happening in the US as many of the large companies have headquarters there. And if it happens in the US, it will set a precedent for all other companies from other nations to do the same.
-
Also, it happening there will affect the internet globally anyway.
