Creation With A Conscience
A Discourse on Invention and MoralityThe purpose of this discourse is to argue that invention, while it can certainly be corrupted for nefarious ends, is inherently good. Throughout history there are numerous examples of inventions that have created death and destruction. These tools were created for war, and have led to the unfortunate ending of many lives before their times.
Despite this corruption of invention, new ideas and creativity have moved society forward as a whole throughout recorded history. Bandages, herbal poultices, and an increased understanding of healing magics have led to much longer life-spans in current times. Social interaction has also benefited from the idea of organizations—grouping people together to pool their knowledge and create more intelligent discourse. Advancements in architecture and metallurgy have allowed for some of the magnificent palaces and temples that dot our landscape. Most importantly, the invention of the quill and inkwell make literacy possible even for portions of the common people.
In the time before the Netherese, our ancestors had little written tradition, short life-spans, and ineffective social interaction. Now, due to the overall benefits of invention and creativity, our society has evolved into one in which the quality of life can be greater for more people. Whereas at one time every human was concerned only with survival and propagation of the race, now many are able to concern themselves with art, writing, and other worthy activities that broaden the human experience.
Creation with a conscience is a key concept of the faith of Deneir. Although recorded information can be used for destruction and death, that would be a corruption of its intended purpose—to improve and extend life. Deneir has dictated that one should not casually create weapons of destruction, but instead focus their creativity on venues that are useful to society. In this way, our society can minimize the corruption of invention and allow invention to carry us towards a better future.
