London Riots

@Fireside:
It's rampant criminality yes, but people keep removing the political factor here. The UK is in a recession, jobs are going/gone and the future of a lot of poorer people in the country is looking bleak. People are angry, and this is what angry people do.
Bullshit it's political.
The dirty little shits would do this regardless of the political climate, because they are skum

So it's just a coincidence this is happening during a recession, just after government cuts to welfare and support for the poorest members of society? And all those riots that happened during the boom? Oh wait.
Of course the rioters themselves aren't being political, they are just being nasty and criminal. But there are political reasons as to why this has happened. No-one rioting is making a political statement, just that the rioting is symptomatic of political machinations. -
Everyone involved should be shot in the back of the head, no questions asked.
Let's please sit down and think before making comments like these. I know Cake doesn't mean it, but it's hardly the kind of statement I want to see here.
I'm horrified as well, I watched the news feeds the entire evening and could hardly believe my eyes. Let's hope things calm down fast without further bloodshed and destruction.
I hope those of you living near the riots areas stay safe. My thoughts are with you.

I know so little about the UK government. And I find it surprising that the economy over there is anywhere near as bad as it is here in the states. With what I've seen on youtube though, shouldn't martial law be forced by now?
-
It seems any place with lots of people living of the government and not working their own way, tend to riot on the drop of a hat. In America, we have LA, the riot capital of the planet.
I would argue if we can get the young people to socially invest (Time, Money, Effort) in their city or state earlier, they will be less inclined in burning down their 'own' city. Something they feel they helped build.
On the flip side, the more organizations give free stuff to people, they divest the people, ultimately making the people resentful of said organization.
I suspect it ties into macro cognitive dissidence:
"Either the government is giving me free stuff cause I suck, or better yet, because they 'owe' me for something." What would a person prefer to believe? -
wait, do you expect mass of people to use their brains? Look around in the world… they can't!
Half of the people can't use their wits well enough to carry out shopping properly, without making it harder for others. -
Nah not yet, only if it escalates tonight will they even consider using tactics like hosing and rubber bullets let alone martial law lol.
Them robbing that beat up guy is scum though, mans should have rushed that prick.
-
If you're frustrated by what you're seeing, and wish you could do something, anything… consider helping clear up the rubble.
Also, if your neighbourhood is targeted, the police just aren't around, and you can't stand it any more - get on the streets en masse.
Last night, in Upton Park, Dalston and Whitechapel, hundreds of Turks, Kurds, Bengalis, Indians and Pakistanis gathered outside businesses in their respective communities to chase off would-be looters. Sikhs are doing the same in Southall tonight, and I hear many football supporters may be doing something similar in parts of North London.

The rapture is near…I can feel it. London already looks like modern day Sodom...guess Gomorrah is LA.

Viral marketing campaign for the new planet of the apes film got out of hand.

It seems the looting has spread to Devon now...
-
There is stuff to loot in Devon?

The criticism of the policies of the current and old government makes me sick. My problem is the horrible and slow reaction of the government to these riots. I might be just one of those loud mouths who thinks "I could do better", but the fact is, with the ammount of damage done already, the burnt buildings and overal destruction, which is spreading throughout the country I do believe that the decision making is done with a three day lag.
Call me silly, but I do feel that there is some deeper underlying (call it conspiracy) reason for all of this happening now. The sheer ammount of chaos looks like a perfect smoke screen.

Lets be fair, its not like it was brewing for days and they had warnings. It came out of nowhere.

Looks like Cameron agrees with you WriterX -
I'm really hoping that this will calm down and come to a sensible close. From what I've seen thus far this is turning into all the british (post)apocalypse movies I've seen.

I think it's about the time the police did something. They're far too passive. I'm all for civil rights - but taking advantage of those rights to cause damage and mayhem should be dealt with quite severely!
