New player looking around
-
Are there safe zones people advise new players to stick too? I keep wandering into trouble and suffering a set-back with the death penalty.
-
East Arabel is the closest thing to a safe zone in the city but any time you do a quest that involves actual fighting, there is always a chance that a rat might catch a crit and knock you down, or a small spider might poison you.
Basically, talk to the people in the Guildhall to find out about the basic quests and read the notice board there. Ask around if you see another player.
Should be able to get to level 2 easy.Play to your character's strengths in game and find others to help.
Rogues like fighters.
Fighters like healers.
Healers like everyone.
Everyone likes healers.
Mages want a bit of everything. As for the death penalty, it was worse in the earlier versions of CoA.
Stay out of the sewers, don't wander the countryside without a partner. (Random mobs can and will spawn with no warning. They can range from a kobold to a mass of elite bandits.)
Most quests need more than one person and items are there to be used. Gold is easy to get but XP can only get earned and is irritatingly easy to lose.

another new player here, thanks to everyone who've i've spoken to so far while playing.
where is the best place to look on the forums for stuff to do with fr in general? my knowledge is quite lacking and i'm worried that it'll mean i get left behind with stuff.

That should help for any general information. I'd probably ignore any "Recent history" of Cormyr, though.

i started not knowing that the forgotten realms even existed!
finding stuff out in game is as good a way of learning as there is i guess. you dont get any out of character bias that way!

I didn't learn about that link for two years.
Yes. Two years.
In case you wonder where its from, its at the very top of this web page..

F-f-f-fail.
Anywho, the link is a tad out-of-date, but it's still around 70% useful.

@Hinx:
I'm liking the number of new players around at the moment, long may it continue! I think Bolthor’s advice is sound, make a generic character to learn the ropes and then take it from there.
Out of curiosity what attracted you to CoA?
Thanks everyone!
The thing that attracted me to CoA is the high number of players at most times of the day, and positive word of mouth I've picked up where I usually play.
I think I have a fairly generic character that should integrate smoothly, and has some good long term potential to be a blast for me, other players and DMs alike.
I'd like to bounce this concept off a DM in an informal fashion, and I think it will not require an application.

don't take what people say to hard, lots of a-holes play here. trust me I know (do not edit my posts again, thank you). But all in all you'll find your spot here sooner or later. We all have and we all do.

Feel free to contact any of the friendly staff. They are more than happy to help.
Don't bother with me. I'm an evil sadistic wanker on a power trip.
But seriously, feel free to drop any of us a line, and that still goes for everyone. We get lots of e-mails and PM's and request of awesome everyday, so don't mind us if we don't get back to you instantly. And don't be afraid to poke us after a couple of days.

As many of you may have now noticed, I have decided to go with an extroverted and proactive Tymoran Cleric. Luckbringer Shamus Callahan, cap and all.
Can't wait to see what happens to him!
