DM Factions: Earning your way in – is it too much?

Or get refused. Depends on the DM you ask, from what I've heared.
However… getting to level 1 isn't that difficult, really. -
A build of a character doesnt have any impact on its RP progression and the making of IC contacts and ties.
Agreed. This wasn't the point of the post. I tried to point out some quit because they have a bad build, it doesn't affect Rp, but it doesnt 'help you when loosing every battle you fight. One might get demotivated playing this character and quit to greener pastures.
trying to point it out better why but if it depends on the DM you ask, I mostly don't bother the DM's, I go about my buisness they go about theirs.

If you as a player feel you screwed up your build, you can ask a DM to help you recreate. At the end of the day we have to live with the choices we made in life however. If your character chose to practice its bard song instead of teaching itself to resist poison, thats the character's folly.Different DMs take different views on rebuilding characters. My personal approach is to encourage the player to run with the choices they made at character creation and subsequent leveling. It's the approach I always took as a player. Life is full of compromises, and I found that my build never interfered with my roleplay, as I tried to roleplay my build, what ever it was, including the mistakes.
As Seter said, we have to live with the choices we make in life, and with a roleplay server, that's also how I approach it. I get one chance, barring deaths, for each leveling, and I make my choices then. If I die and relevel, I take the opportunity to re-evaluate those choices, but I never went down the route of dying on purpose to get more HP, different feats etc.
-
That said, I really hate it when i die and have to relevel… and then get much worse HP roll on level up. Bam, double trouble.
The thread seems to have gone off topic though. -
@SpiffyHas:
I was told the app was merely a formality.
a full app is still needed though not always in the same level as a mage app for instance for the mage guild
wyvern is a fighting force so they wouldnt need such detail as a mage would
-
Furthermore, the more fun and intrigue you've brought as you earn your way in, the less you have to promise to do in an app, if you get what I mean. Goals become less important, as the DM's already will be aware of where you're going.
-
[22:49] so why is it, you think, that squires and auxiliary dont last long enough to get fully inducted in the factions?
Involvement and interaction
You have to give both of the above to new members or they leave.Do everything in game
To me this is the big one nothing puts me off a faction more than having to read pages of text on the forums just to keep up,tell the new characters briefly whats going on while you take them along to do something about it.Thats what I think anyhow and is one reason I prefer player factions less paper work and you do most things in game.

I have to disagree on both these posts.

Goals are the key motivating factor that drives a characters action. The application process is nothing but letting you chart down what you want to do with your character which stems out from his background. The more goals you have, less is the frustration of logging into the server and not knowing what to do. To be honest, if you have spent some time in the server, its not hard for you to list down things that you can do or want to do.
If someone has problems defining more than two or three goals to pursue then you know that the character was made without any forethought. If you even get such a char enlisted in a DM Faction, All you will be doing is tag along with your faction chars on their quests or goals often wondering why am I not being promoted? since you are not taking initiatives to create adventure that stems out of your chars personal or faction goals
Why do you want to lay the burden on DM’s asking them to remember what you are doing ? They have reiterated the fact that they DM to have fun just like us
On Forums, If you are in a group (Faction), Use it to the fullest extent to note down what you are pursuing and why you are pursuing. Many of the faction PC will comment on it or offer help, if you are consistent and ruthless in this endeavor in game, you will soon have NPC (DM) showing interest on what you are doing by their response in the thread you created to track this intiative.
But saying goals are less important cause DM know what you are doing or even saying stay out of writing down what you are doing in Forum, instead just type it in a game to the PC, who may not login next day, a week or a month…and you are left with no where to go..I feel are wrong messages

The frustration i have is i wanna push a goal or multiple goals forwards try to make some intquie but after awhile of sending messages meeting people and unable to even get a questing buddy let alone someone to explore a small area to push a little one, i will either give up in a frustration or go there alone and die a few times then log out feeling all I've done is wasted time and not pushed anything forward. Since i couldn't gather any interest in any of the ideas even simple let alone complex ideas.
I enjoy myself being a tag-along since i can jump on other peoples things and see what people "better" then me can do, and i could along for some simple jokes, a good adventure and a laugh. But it seems that is frowned upon. that been the impression I've been getting if you want to get anywhere everyone has to be the hero or the Villan, Minions are required, I look at a Wyvern say if that Wyverns just with the mage for the promise of riches and security why wouldn't a hire merc take it. Hell look at the Mountain or the Hound. They were made high ranking because they were big and intimidating and scary as balls.(and the Lannisters had use for that)

I never intended by my words to frown upon the tag alongs or minion type chars..but trying to help when Players who join faction at the lowest rank often wonder why they are not getting promoted.
Often DM factions are best place to get allies and players of like mind. Why not present your idea to a DM in IRC, a DM who plays at your timezone, or a timezone you can play when he or she is online, try checking if your idea is boring or generates interest and adventure amongst player base including conflict and when that DM is online, try to go out and lead such adventure, in the DM channel type in a humble reminder saying "so and so doing so and so, to find so and so or to achieve so and so" I dont mean spamming the channel..but once every 30 mins should be fine. Be persistent in your effort and I know for sure, you will be rewarded
I feel bit awkward to mention these things cause there are real stalwart players in this server who knows better than me and such if my post doesnt make sense, please correct it
