Socketing
-
So the new system is getting off the ground right now. We're rolling out slowly to catch bugs. There are items that have 1 socket opening, and three kinds of sockets crippled, flawed, and flawless (each grants no to substantial flaws when you use the socket).
There are plans to allow two and three socketable items available in shops, some harder to reach than others in the future. Four (or more) socketable items will be available on some DM quests.
Right now, I just want to hear some basic feedback on the system though. Things that may help guide as us as we roll it out further.
-
Where's our Taunt and UMD gems?
Hehe. The new system is pretty fun and exciting.

They're out there actually.

Will we ever get an indication on the number of socket-slots? And will socketed items remain sellable? Like in case you screw up with the penalties like we've seen some examples of. Heal +3, heal -4 and so on. :P
I would like there to be indicated the number of slots as it makes appraising the value of the item easier (in terms of selling unsocketed) and how best to make use of your gems.
And I'd like gems with the same ability to stack, if the bonuses they give each are not very high. Maybe cap it at two gems stacking so we don't see any +9 skill items out there.
-
I like the new system A lot. Much more simplier and easy to use. All i wish are for more socketable items in random loot.
And also add flavor to the socketable item such as
"Kobald socket dagger" or something like that with a story would be cool
-
Are there socketable gems that give the well known +1 enchancement or +1 ac?
Just to keep in mind.
=]
-
Items shouldn't stack.
You can use the socketable item to determine how many sockets are left.
No, you won't likely be able to sell them. This is because some gems may make a socketable item worth thousands of thousands of gold.
-
I love the new system, so much, it almost hurts.
Having said that, I've really not noticed many varieties of gems yet, this may be due to the whole rolling things out slowly thing.
As was said, a +1 enhancement gem might be good, but to be honest, I think with dual and tri socket items, all you will need is +1 AB gems. As there are +1 damage type gems, and the combination will do exactly the same, and be much more interesting. The way I see it, +1 would be general, more than +2 would be vs certain enemy types, this would keep things balanced I feel.
I love the idea of +2 (or even 3) AC/AB/Damage type vs certain creatures.
If it hasn't been made yet, weight reduction gems. And socketted bags, enabling the creation of magic bags!

These can't be done by the current system. Though, some magical bags are likely to start showing up on treasure tables on some quests. Often the tougher, less frequently done quests.

=]+1 Enhancement not likely, no. +1 AB yes. +1 AC yes.

That's feasible, and such things may show up on quests–but would be way down the line.
-
For info, I actually found a socketable short bow on the gypsy healer quest.
Didn't actually test if it was from the old system or not though… no one wanted it, I think it just got left there.
-
oh! oh! socketable arrows!!!
wait… do they already exist?

Will there ever be a indication of how strong something is ?
Are they all the same ? Are the results random ?
For instance, I went through a lot of gyrations to obtain a Flawless Gem of Healing and used it on on a Belt+1. it ended up being a belt that gives +2 to heal skill.
Does the users level or ranks in lore or spell craft matter at all ?
Does it mater what you use it on?
Its all a big unknown.

I think maybe that +2 would get better if you put two or three gems in an item gaining a +4 or +6, though I dont really know im just guessing here

I i had known that, I would have saved it.. or sold it. certainly not used it to make something less usefull than the +3Heal gloves that would be worth 100gp. Like you said… guessing...

I think the amount is random from 1-5 when it comes to skill bonuses. The level of "flaw" on the item only determine how big the penalties are if I'm not mistaken.
-
i think i remember seeing a posts where moloch said that flawless gems have less of a bonus tot hem to offset them not having a penalty.

Some gems will say, some will not. Typically, its safe to assume the biggest bonuses will come with the biggest flaws if the gem isn't clear.
-
Yes, the more flawed a gem is the bigger the benefits, but the penalities will be bigger as well.
