I have found that the "hiring bodyguard" route works very well for this type of stuff, and helps to encompass players who might not be interested (or realized they were interested) in your noble and or wicked plans or plots.

RE: Intrigue and Adventure VS CoA Sims
On the other hand, I think there is some fault with the DMs. My number one problem over the years I've played on this server (I don't do forum posts typically and even forgot my names) is that exploration=death without reward 90% of the time.
In my case it has actually been the opposite… i have died many more 10/1 times on scripted quests than outside the city.
If your character has a bit of intelligence or wisdom, he should know its dangerous to head out without preperations (potions of invis are great) and even with a small 4 person party, you can have alot of fun out in the wild.
And yes, im totally for people doing more of these types of excursions and vow to definately take part in them as much as i can.
Hope DMs can think of fun and creative ways to pull players into them as well. -
RE: Intrigue and Adventure VS CoA Sims
Well, we already have a few places that grant Exploration XP bonuses when you travel to them for the first time. We can scatter a few more of these around if people suggest good locations.
One thing i liked alot about EfU was the explorations bonuses, for literally every new area you got bonus XP, scaling at the distance from the city or other reasons.
I thought this was a great idea (and it worked, increasing incentive to go and explore and do something new) and would suggest it whole-heartedly to the CoA crew.
And i know it's been reiterated by Moloch like 100 times in this thread, but…
@Mr.Moloch:DMs don't make bricks unless you give us the mortar of ADVENTURE and INTRIGUE.
Yea lol i think this is great…

RE: Intrigue and Adventure VS CoA Sims
Montigue, exactly what Moloch was saying, was that you should go do fun adventure related things, IN CONNECTION, with your rebuilding efforts.
Go identify the hidden Silvermist cave and slay the beast that has captured or killed your favorite Dwarven Brick maker from his forest brick making kiln and home.
I guarentee you, the DM's would be like "lol, ok" and you could build your building.

RE: Intrigue and Adventure VS CoA Sims
Am I allowed to "lol"?
The DMs want adventure and intrigue, but also a genuine fear of death and it's harshness, and then wonder why people don't drag their characters they probably adore into the waiting maws of crippling, maiming, and death?
When I was actively DMing, I found that players of characters who wanted adventure and intrigue, but also harbored a realistic perception of death tended to feel the most rewarded. I was a lot more interested in helping out these sorts of players because I knew that the game (to them) was about telling a story through their character. They found and figured out exciting things to do, but understood if their character died or was effected deeply by the event, it wasn't personal. And as a result, I had more fun because they wouldn't send me PMs after the event with page long rants and complaints.
There's no reward without risk, afterall.
I just want to say that, in respsonse to this post, that death or fugue, becomes much less worrying, the more you get fugued.
You may realize, that after the 5th time or so your character is sent to the fugue (much like my main), and you respawn each time, you realize why you are really playing that character, in a game, that is meant to be fun and enjoyable.
Basically, the more one character gets knocked out and loses that xp, the more unattached you become, and the more willing you become to really be and play that character, and really enjoy the game (without that "bad taste" feeling that makes so many quit).

RE: Intrigue and Adventure VS CoA Sims
@Love:
I thought CoA was a "political" server. Faction vs faction, PC's vs PC's. I'm surprised when Moloch says that it doesn't take much effort for a DM to set up an "adventure" for the players. I always thought you didn't have the time for that, or that you had to think of 5 small, smart events/plots of your own before you were "rewarded" with an "adventure". I've been focusing on PC vs PC when I've been setting my goals, trying to figure out the easiest and quickest way to start some conflict between two groups of people.
What I'm saying is this.
Suppose your Helmite has spent weeks or even months going on quests looking for the Lost Sword of Helmy McHelmite. He regularly takes other players on adventures to seek it out, organizes trips to the Underdark/Stormhorns/Vast Swamp looking for it (even though you know ooc that its not actually out there when you leave but you're roleplaying the search and quest for it).
It is really EASY for you to send a DM Tell saying "Heading into the Vast Swamp looking for the Sword of Helmy McHelmite which is a relic my PC is searching for that probably doesn't exist."
Now a DM seeing that and looking for something to do will go, GREAT! Then I'll spawn monsters, maybe spawn adventure and action for you, and maybe if I see you doing this long enough and I'm having lots of fun with your character-I'll spawn the Sword of Helmy McHelmite.
No application necessary. You were just doing awesome things getting people out to adventure and entertain them and me and so you gain my attention and a cool reward.
Now its feasible, you'll never find the Sword of Helmy McHelmite–but odds are you'll at the least get some attention. You may even earn the enmity of Mystran McMystie who wants the Sword of Helmy McHelmite to stay lost who will work against you as a player character to foil your searches and challenge you to duels and seek to undermine your followers.
Heh, this is good to know, as a player who enjoys doing this, that this is cool with the DM's, i expected it would be.
I will make sure to do some more of it again sometime soon

RE: Idiotic Things I Did With My First Character
I was recently made to point and exclaim, "I did that!" to a certain post about metagaming NPC guards, and I thought it might be fun to journey back about 3 years to my very first character: Relch Vlamir. Don't get me wrong, I loved playing Relch, but he was guilty of some silly OOC behavior. Thankfully with the help of some newfound friends (Cocopuffs, Dark Ranger, and One Chord Wonder, if you still troll the forums this means you!) I was able to figure things out. Eventually.
Relch ran. Everywhere. Why walk? Walking is for slow people who want to talk and interact with other PCs! That's crazy-talk! I'll never forget the first time I "did" Nada's, and bolted out the door. One Chord Wonder (playing a Bhallir retainer at the time) simply said IC, "What's all the rush for?" I got the hint after that. Felt a little silly too. Besides, Relch had old bones, not sure what he was in such a hurry for (more on that later).
Relch whipped out his scythe in the Tired Traveller and pointed it at Oliver Baba. I could probably just describe this with a "wow" and that would cover it.
This was before I knew that there were PC guards. Seriously, I had no idea. All I knew was that some punk (played by Baba) had marched into the TT with his sword drawn (which I learned was a no-no on the opening chessboard) and was interrogating a friend of mine. So after he refused to put away his sword, I whipped it out. Welcome to jail.
Relch was a king. Clearly I had read no rules at this point. I made my character, and in the description I had something along the lines of "Relch is the King of the Northern Ridge." This of course leads me to…
Relch had an insane background, especially for Arabel. For Relch's age, I put 5000, because that's how old I made him. The short version - Relch had already inhabited 3 bodies, fought toe-to-toe with Illmater (Relch lost), and travelled across a vortex that stripped him of all his worldly powers before arriving at Arabel. On a wagon.
So, I'm wondering what sort of silly things you all did with your first characters. I look forward to the stories. Please do share!
Lol, i would just like to comment that i loved this post haha

RE: What Should Clerics Be Doing?
@coa_deloril:
The only cleric I feel I played really well was Cold Aerthur, a follower of Shaundakul. I mean, I really tried with this guy, making sending for explorers and the like to meet me outside XXX gate, and we could wander around, and see what we could see. I tried every different wording of this you could imagine, and the only time I got people, was when I threw in ((lvl 1-" at the end of my sending, and people thought we were all going on some new quest for lowbies. When I explained there was no "quest giver" That I meant anyone was welcome, they all packed up and left. Rather ironically, it was that same day that I stumbled upon a DM quest, and had the best explorative experience ever with my char.
Maybe Shaundakuls just harder to represent, maybe people dont like getting out of the city, or maybe it was just me stuffing up, but it seems that no matter what I tried to get peple involved, unless it included the words ((lvl X-X)) nobody gave a rats ass, which was mildly frustrating, I'll admit.
My two cents
I know this is old (first page), but i was just reading it, and im sure others and myself have very similar sentiments when people call for quests which others have no or little OOC knowledge about.
What is it? To me it's truly OOC shenanigans, but who am i to force someone to play or behave a certain way…
On your other point, i love being outside of the city, it has nicer music (lol), the green is much nicer on the eyes, and a generally more comfortable aura (to me), and people often act as if they really are in danger, rather than "abusing" (may i say) the OOC knowledge that the quests they go on every day are generally safe and will be of a high safety level.
Off topic, i know heh, but i wanted to say something about this post which intrigued me.

RE: What Should Clerics Be Doing?
Very interesting… i notice, playing a cleric of a lesser known god (lurue) most people arent very interested in dogma, or learning about the god/gods in any way more than getting their swords enchanted.
So be it, is that not much like real life, where many, maybe most people, are simply materialistic, cowardly, and uninterested in the "unknown"?
Anyway, maybe some of you saw or ventured with my character (Derek Aira) on Monday night , on the Tree of All-Seeing quest, i hammed it up quite a bit and was very very fun and hope to work on it more again today and tonight.
Take care and best wishes.
(thanks to all the great DMs and players involved)
