What have been the defining events for Arabel?
-
I was sat in the sun this afternoon with a cool mint julep at my side pondering on the state of the world and a question popped into my head.
What have been the defining events for Arabel?
What has made the City of Arabel what it is today? I guess I mean this to go beyond the death of Zxhoo and one off events but to focus more on the grand sweeping events that took months or years to build up to and then changed the whole character of the city. Events that caused new DM and player factions to spring up and killed off other DM and player factions.

From learning about the server in game the Civil War appears to have marked a grand change in the server’s direction, I’m still learning about it now but it seems to have been an incredible time of transformation.

Civil War.
-
The Thayans getting kicked out, Shadovar war, The Pheonix Legion, Bhalir and PD's war, Eastway getting nuked and the goldfeather plot.
There are probably loads more but it all kind of fits in and makes the city what it is today. I mean just imagine if the Thayans had never been kicked out and still remained during the Civil war? Arabel could now be somesort of Thayan city.

Would anyone mind elaborating a bit on these events? I understand it may be a case of finding out in character but providing there aren’t any spoilers it might be a nice little read for the newer generation to whet their appetites with.

For me the Shadovar war was the biggest fun/most defining.
Through some luck in timing and the good graces of the dms, my Danu character and the Gleaming Blades were able to participate in some epic events. From scouting shadovar forces with the purple dragons, to marching north with Lord Marliir only to see him fall to the rogue spellblades, hunting the same spellblades, to defending Tilverton to the last, we had a lot of good times. Events like these have happened since then of course, but my personal involvement and interaction with well role played characters has never quite been the same. I've never felt quite the same comradery with characters as I did with people durring that time. The characters seemed -real- and that's what made the events defining in my mind. The dynamic between Acer and Duncan was classic. The misfit nature of the mercenary company we were in lent itself to a lot of comedy. We had the only Half orc mage in Grogal Shaggorath. The day that Duggar died I actually shed a tear or two at the keyboard, and Mickanderous's counting heads and his chicken sandwiches… well there were a lot of personal touches in those characters that I will never forget. The involvement in plots then seemed a lot more natural than what I see now. There was probably a lot of effort on the part of the dms still, but for the most part we just sort of "fell" into all our adventures without knowing what the hell was going on half the time. It was fun and epic without the feeling of plot frenzy that I sense now when I try to get involved in things.

Definatly the shadovar war. It made a difference in many ways.

Most wars, introductions of new factions.

I guess this is what I intended when I was considering the question. The event, and why…

If you really want to get an idea of what some old meta-plots were about, go back through the polls and read the plot feedback threads. Won't help with the newer ones, anything up to and after the civil war, but gives an idea of what some of the events that shaped the server were/

That was an initiative on the players’ part to chronicle some of the more notable events of the server through stories. It unfortunately fizzled out, but there’s a list which catalogues a number of the turning points for CoA leading up to early 2008.

Apparantly the link/thread you postd doesnt exist anymore.

When that Bhaliiran retainer beat someone to death with a leg of ham.

Oh right, can players not see Project Arabel?
-
I remember having read stuff, but it's probably archived and offline now.

We used to be able to see project Arabel, It seems to be missing now though.
