My suggestion is to sit down and think about the character you created. The person you're playing. What would they do? How would they react? How easily influenced are they? Look back at what has happened and then do what you feel would be natural for the character… not you, the character.
If all else fails, hop into the IRC channel and bug a DM or a veteran player for some 1v1 advice.

I think you'd have an easier time if you found some active players to stick with, rather than trying to be involved everywhere. Find a group of characters that you can support and get support from.
