How Many Miles?
-
Just a throw away subject really as I considered things at home, namely the distances between Waterdeep and Arabel both as the crow flies and by trade routes and others.
I'm not familiar with the Forgotten realms per se other than PC games and though I can look everything up, I'm determined to learn everything IG (which as an unexpected and unintentional thing suits my char' entirely).
How many miles in scale do you think a character can travel in one day?
I've done 50 miles overnight (12 hrs) in rl and a friend has done 60.
How many miles do you think you travel overnight walking or with magic.
And come to think of it, how many in a session? :-)

The average adult human male walks at about 5km/h so, in 8 hours at a casual pace that'd be 40 km, which is somewhere around 25 miles per 8 hours if you're in no hurry.
-
Yes I'm good with that, but can one walk from the city to the Stormhorns IG in one day for example and how many miles would that be?
Heh, I know things can be grossly exaggerated for gameplay purposes, I was more interested in how many miles a character does actually travel.

I'd say you would struggle with that distance even by dragon in one day.
Roughly the distance from Waterdeep to the Stormhorns along major roads is 1000 miles.
Map for reference: here.It depends on the burden you carry. If you walk or go by horse/carriage, how long you're willing to keep going each day, breaks, detours etc.
But I would say you could cover maybe 40 miles a day with a steady pace. Divide a thousand by that and you'll get 25 days worth of travel. Add a few stops, monsters, resupplies and so on and you get a month.

Heh, maybe I'm more like Fur than I realised.
I mean like IG can you walk from Arabel to the Stormhorns in a day and how many miles would that cover if it was real? How many miles do you think your character might cover in a game day or session.
As I say, it's a throw away thread, not meant for any deep rooted analysis. :-)

Arabel to the closest part of the higher Stormhorns appears to be like 20-30 miles on the map, so you could do that in less than a day. But likely not the two IG hours it takes to get there.
Yes, there is the limitations of the engine and the module, but use common sense here. If you came from Waterdeep you could say the journey took a month, but if you're going to the Stormhorns IG and back you can do the trip in a few hours and likely say it was done so.

The D&D rules for movement cover this:
-
Miles!?! Pfft!. What are those? We use the old km over here.

Sadly, Delanish, this realm was created by a user of the ancient imperial system and thus he chose to implement it into his fantasy world that we now delve into.
Perhaps the 5.0 ruleset will bring some changes to the metric system once it is released. You could always e-mail the WotC with the idea. I bet you'll get a majority vote if a public referendum is held.
