Help Understanding Clerics Concept, Build and Mechanically
-
I'm just looking at what it would take to roll a Cleric character and to be honest its quite confusing. I've been looking at the Wiki, some threads on this forum and the ingame menus on a tester cleric I've rolled.
And I'm not quite understanding how it all ties together, especially with the Extra Domains. Some of the domains just have Generi-text, the Wiki has some Extra Domains that are no longer in game and vice versa with some being in game that are not documented.
The Wiki and Deities page also list a few deities that don't have any IG Skillbook (during the set up with the wagon before arabel).
I've also heard that if your domains aren't selected correctly for your deity you get zero divine spells.
Anyone who's rolled a cleric be willing to run me through in general or if theres any threads I've missed.

If you go to the player resources thread and select the CoA specific domains sticky it pulls up the primary list of dieties available on the server and the domains allowed by each one. Within it you can select "here", go to the NWN vault and select the "text" version right below the download and it will show you the content within custom domains. The rest are in the original game book.
-
Also if you choose CoA only domains you will need a dm to wand you for them to work.

Are there any Application restricted domains? Can't see any mention on the Wiki for them.
Oh and lastly are there any restrictions in naming; such as If I was to roll a Lathander Cleric, would I be able to name the character 'Dawnbringer [NAME]' or would that require an IG thing first (such as if theres a group of PC's of the same deity).
-
AFAIK, You can call yourself a Dawnbringer but if you want the temple to actually recognize one you would need an app.

Thats quite good; Would I be able to do a retroactive Application for 'official' status then?
That way I could roleplay the whole 'in the name of', calling himself a Dawnbringer in the attempts to acheive the real status.
Or when you say "call yourself Dawnbringer" do you mean the title Dawn Bringer shouldn't be put in the First name field?
Edit:
Also IG right now looking at the Domains. Can't see the Renewal Domain anywhere.//Nvm Its under Restoration xD
As a rough plan:
Deity: Lathander
Domains: Renewal, Strength
StatPts: 12, 10 , 10 , 12, 18 , 10
Neutral Good.Would that stand up as atleast a basic cleric? (Apologies for the Twenty Questions, but the closest I've come to CoA custom stuff is the altered Barbarian stuff.)

Don't put titles into your character name unless you apply for it.
There is no correct build for a cleric it all comes down to how you play them if your an undead destroying machine point in charisma helps alot,Selfbuffing fighters you need good combat stats,DC cleric…etc...
It's all down to personaly play style i like caster clerics so my cleric characters tend to be built around that. -
Okay thats great :p Thanks everyone.
Edit: Okay well it seems it is not entirely done and dusted.
Chose Lathander at the deity chooser, had it written in the deity field, picked two valid Domains (Renewal and Strength).
Only the Strength Domain is showing on the feats / radial menu.
Asked Abby but Abby is stumped also. Any other Lathanderan clerics know anything?
-
Renewal has no activated power, so it has no reason to show up in the radial menu. Ignore whether or not its on your feat menu.
All you have to do is look at your spell list and see if Lesser Restoration is available as a level 1 spell. If it is, it's working. Additionally, your HP should reflect toughness properly. With 14 Con you should have 11 HP as a level 1 cleric with Renewal domain. I don't know for sure if it would display the toughness feat, but I'm basically as positive as I can be without testing it, that it should be displayed.
-
Ah that explains it then.
I was expecting to see some kind of feat to signify it :p Woot then. Tyvm.

You're free to build to taste, of course, but 18 wisdom rarely comes into use unless you hit lv 9 (and then all you get is one bonus spell slot).
From my clerical experience you'll want some more strength, but I suppose this is a bit late now.I once did a 10, 10, 10, 14, 16(+2), 15 Cleric and got to lv 8 just fine (granted, it took ages) but don't expect to be capable of doing much on your own.
As a personal preference I would say to never pass 16 Wis on a cleric on CoA (unless you make lv 13, but then you get a point on lv 12 for Wis), but then we have the roleplay aspect and all that.
And yes, some of the more obscure deities don't have their own book in the deity chooser, so make sure you type it into the deity field on creation (and DON'T misspell it!). You also risk someone having made a character during the same session (no reset in between) and having bought the book already, meaning you're left without even if you knew it was available. Bottom line: ALWAYS type in the deity on creation, don't rely on the books as they are unreliable.

Charisma is good for Clerics, both from a RP perspective (helps make converts, etc.) and for undead hunters, as it affects your Turn Undead.
And yeah, if you want official status in the Church send in an app. It's not a massive perk, so it's an easy one to get approved, really.
-
A Dawnbringer for example i say have a good amount of Charisma for two fold reason, one to spread the word of Lathander and convert those to his faith and for the mechanical reason of turning undead.
Dawnbringer's hate undead and thus their capabilities at killing undead is empowered.
A cleric will change based on the god they follow. It be very unlikely i see a cleric of Bane smelling flowers and picking daisies with a Sune follower
As for build it depends what sorta cleric you want to be, you wanna be in a fight, a buff machine and hang back with a crossbow, right in there kicking butt with the fighters. I've seen both work.
