Conflict is key.
It is often the Key, but I'm not sure what Conflict the Gleaming Blades actually went out of their way to establish. They seems to be focussed on "What was out there" i.e. the Monsters and Treasure and Dungeons rather than the "Enemy Faction." I think they were much more about PvM rather than PvP. If a Faction needed muscle, they could call on the Blades, and if the job seemed interesting and fun and would generate gold, the Blades would look into it. To me, that's what a real Mercenary outfit is like; independent and definitely not signing any permanent contracts, just a temporary contract to fulfill a task and then move on to the next client. My character in the Blades was mere cannon fodder and not in the command structure so I might have missed something but the attractiveness of this faction to me was always the purity of the Mercenary outlook. "What's in it for us?" and "Where's our next meal ticket coming from?" and most importantly, "Is this fun and exciting?"

We had our share of conflicts in the Gleaming Blades, but like Lamancha said it was kind of our thing for a while there to take on whatever task we thought was in line with our goals and would pay. Some of the best fun for me came with the shadovar conflicts. The Gleaming Blades were with Lord Marliir when he went down. They were at Tilverton when it was destroyed. They were with the purple dragons when the shadovar conflict was resolved. The dms left bread crumbs that were fun to follow, and we did through a lot of interesting twists. Pvp wasn't really central most of the time so in regards to conflict, I pretty much focused on plot and machine opponents back then. I learned that to stay involved in things it helped to have a large recruitement and to use the forums a lot. There were a lot of blue and white uniforms on the server once upon a time… I'm not sure that the current player base could support such a large amount of people now like it could in the 55/55 days.

Adding to the above…
The pvp showdown between Duggar and Crowan was the stuff that awesome is made of.
