I do get frustrated with all the emotes and the like in group discussions/conferences/planning/loot division. I miss things like you. However, the emotes are part of characterisation. How much should we suspend RP to accomodate game play. That is the balance beam we all walk upon. If you remove the emotes of anger, frustration and stuff when someone else gets the Sword of Godly Uberness in front of you, you cut out an ideal opportunity for role play. Yet, many of us are here to play a game, and being rewarded with a at least pair of Magnificent Gloves of Playfulness if we miss out on the Rod of Dastardly Cunning in return for three hours of intensity battling the Swamp People's Swamp God is what it is all about.
I have learned to live with the frustration of missing things in the chat window to allow folks the fredom of playing their character the way they want rather than imposing my needs for clarity upon them. I emphasise "live with" as it still frustrates the hell out of me!
One thing I might offer if you are the leader is to ask folks IC to "SHUT UP and STAND BLOODY STILL while I sort this mess out for you all or you'll GET NOTHIN'!". However, you do need the approriate character to yell that sort of thing. I am not one to advocate the abhorant command of "Remain In-Character at all times!" because that way, for me, is dire. Yet I do find that, sometimes, a request in character that satisfies the OOC need is more effective.

You want the "fairest" way to handle loot? Make everyone bid on items that they want, and share all the gold amongst everybody. Therefore, even if you don't have a need for anything, you still get gold for what you helped obtain. And if you do want something that someone else wants… are you gonna complain for getting a chance to bid on some DM lewt? And even if you're outbidded, you still get a share of that cake.

Yeah, and you get a fat coin purse while they get a gold sink. And if the character is old, then the likes of them not even needing the stuff is higher. At least it gives the warrior some payback when only a wizard's robe was found.

I'd agree with this. I hate bidding on quest loot - I feel bad about getting it just because i'm the (generally) longer-running character or conversely about not getting it because I only had 2k on me, not 20k.
My preferred method these days is to lay it all out, ask everyone to stand beside the item they want most, and if there are no conflicts everyone picks up and repeats - if there are conflicts then the two/more people all after the same item sort it out between themselves, with one "bribing" the other, flipping a coin or whatever else - the losers go and choose another item left over from "round 1" before "round 2" starts.
It usually makes it very visibly clear who's after what rather than searching through the chat window.

It might help to know your team OOCly, I think it's a good method then. -

I tried suggesting something similar several times years back… not once did people agree to it

Yeah, I saw it performed once and never seen or been happiest as to which way loot was distributed.
