So… Character crisis.

I agree Rabbit, I don't know my PC too well until I have a chance to play them and get to know their quirks a bit better.
So glad to see it isn't just me. I can't form a character on paper, I always have to jump into a couple of solid interactions before I get to know my character and learn who he is.
My favourite tactic is to roll up based on a basic idea and get into it, maybe start minioning or something. This gives me an intuitive feel for who the character is at wich point I can either start playing him for real or simply start a new one based on what evolved.

There is no right way to start a character. Do what works for you. My last pc (not including a lathanderite I played for a grand total of 6 times) was actually made to see if i would enjoy playing a wizard in modern coa, and was never meant to last. The build was terrible, the character had no backstory save what I made up on the fly and took notes on so I wouldn't forget it, and ended up being a character of decent influence on the server. I've also had success with characters that were planned out heavily before logging in, so I'm not saying this is the way to go, but logging in and just playing is a rock solid way to get past the idea drought if you are someone who tends to plan things heavily from the get go.
The only important thing, and I am afraid I am going to sound like a broken record, is to have fun. If you are having fun, those around you will have fun, and the character will be a success no matter what happens next.

I spent six minutes on Tsar Hicks before creation and about fifteen on Rathcore. These were splendid characters, for me, to play. Characters are like Nike. Just Do It!
