DM spicing and extra "reimbursement"
-
My necromancer tends to be in a permanent state of poor, because of:
1. Using up supplies just to survive
2. Spending DM opportunities for character progression instead of reward seekingI also managed to be taught a very hard lesson by some less merciful DM's in my time that made me truly change my perspective. One of which is not all situations are "winnable" and that is just life. If you are on a trek with two buddies and suddenly the most powerful demon in the Abyss appears to stomp your butts… do you really think something that could demolish a super-powered wizard, or crush a celestial is something you should be taking on with mortal weapons?
I agree with DM raises in one case: When the DM built an event or spice without an ability to walk away from/peaceful resolution and the balance was off, making it a bit unfair for the adventuring party. The only other time is when the DM believes the death does not add to the story and feels the particular chapter being portrayed in this event would be served better if no one died. People die in danger, and yes it does suck to lose 2 weeks of questing XP due to one little incident, doesn't mean it is better to the community as a whole to bring you back.
I agree with many who have commented above in that I'm honestly tired of hack and slash events where battle is the only option and RP lays to the Wayside. This is City of Arabel, not Diablo 3. The only time I want a straight plow through is when I just lost aforementioned 2 weeks of XP to a stupid death and want to get back to where I was. In this case, it is only for a couple quest trains and then I'm back to RP (Which is why Levrana stays perpetually at a low level and why I always suck at PVP)
Even my "I want to see the greatest battles and smash my enemies to bits" barbarian character always stopped to have a insult match with his friends or enemies and kept RP going or stopped to boast and brag on how he was going to CRUSH the enemy... (maybe or maybe not on purpose giving the smarter characters time to come up with a plan while he insulted their man dresses)
My point is, I agree that sometimes DM's do in fact tend to not reward risk adequately, but it is FAR FAR less than the mercy they tend to show lately and it is so small of an occurrence, it is dwarfed by the amount of loot, XP, gold and story rewards I have seen them give out in V5.

I agree with Lunatic. QFT:
