Hello City of Arabel
-
Wait, how do we know he's not some super-advanced bot…?
QUICK WHAT YEAR DID PRINCE ALBERT REACH PUBERTY?
-
Who?
-
Prince Albert.
:P -
I’m considering applying for a Prestige Class for my first character concept in the City of Arabel. Will it effect my application if I don’t have any other previous characters on the server? (if previous RP experience is taken into account). If the application is declined will I receive notice? Am I able to apply a few weeks in advance without an existing account?
Does the server support an eat drink, sleep and piety system? Could someone please provide me with details on how it all works? Where do you get water from, if you can cook, how sleep affects you etc?
What level of character customisation is available? Using the Arabel crafting system are you able to personalise equipment by renaming and editing descriptions? Will I be able to modify character appearances in game and what sorts of options are available?

Food and drink are not required but there are food items and beverages with no mechanical use. Donating to temple's donation bowls can grant some benefits but I'm not sure what they are. Resting affects your character only to replenish spells and abilities, and heal one HP per level.

You can change your armor appearance and I think your description. Items can't be renamed or redescribed however, but there is an IC letter-writing system that works by redescribing a letter item. Modifying body parts is not available.
I'll let a DM answer the application stuff.

Having played in Arelith myself in the past, I can try to help determine the differences pertaining to what you asked. Like H said, there are plenty of different drinks and foods available in the game, but it's more for role playing flavor as opposed to literally limiting your character with an established "Thirst and Hunger" system. This was the case way back when, but it's since been removed. I honestly disliked that system in Arelith because, while it did try to capture a more realistic aspect of role play, I felt it actually detracted from my immersion when I had to inhale four charges of rations in the middle of a dungeon.
On that note, you'll find that CoA is a much more focused experience in terms of making and achieving goals that impact the server as a whole. There's been a ton of discussions in the past between trying to role play real life in "Sims" fashion (as people do in Arelith), and role playing real daring adventurers who travel to other planes, meet gods and devils, and literally shake the foundation of everyone around them. I've always felt that CoA had more real substance, you know? Although I'm not talking down to that server mind you, it's a wonderful place, but it just suits a different, almost more casual style of role play.
It's basically a tale of, you get what you put into it here.
Also, there are no true "zones", if you will, in CoA. And by that I mean, there aren't like "leveling areas" where you go depending on your strength - almost like an MMORPG game. The entire server can be dangerous, for anyone, at any time. You don't go into the woods unless you know what you're doing, or have a guide, else you'll find yourself staring down the maw of a Cormyrian Mountain Bear who will rip you in half in one turn.

Exciting I agree that a system such as hunger does break immersion more than it brings immersion to the game. Good news then :D and yes break away from the common MMORPG! You should be portraying characters in a living world where dangers can lurk anywhere and a creature’s strength is determined by the individual creature and not by the “area” it lives in. Its great to hear how this server focuses its game play priorities. I’m really beginning to get a feel by all of your answers how this server will portray itself, thank you.
Just a few more questions if you wouldn’t mind? I’ve noticed that CoA has ‘Subdual’, ‘Sparring’ and ‘Beat down’ commands and I haven’t been able to find any information on how they work. How does each of these systems work in game once you enter the .command?
Also I’ve noticed you have an ‘Auctions, Sales and Economics’ section on the forum and there are many adverts about individual mercantile businesses. Does CoA enable you to own your own shop and if so how does this work?

EDIT: seems I wasn't accurate here, read another comment below.
PVP modes determine what happens when your PC opponent reach zero HP. In either of these cases he retains 1 HP.
In the case of sparring, he in prone position, but can get up pretty fast and he has nothing to do but heal the hit point damage.
When on subdual mode, your opponent gets to prone position and can't get up for a while. I have no idea what the time depends on. He will also receive ability point damage once back on feet.
Beatdown mode helps you to take items from the other character, the longer you beat them the more items they drop. I'm unsure if it applies similar ability score damage as subdual mode. There are no shops, you just know what they sell and can find the other char in game, probably using the sending system.

The Auctions, Sales and Economics threads are for people who have come across items they wish to sell, auction off to advertise for items they seek, It's sort of like 'for sale' signs in shop windows and the knowledge is treated as IC. You can play having a business in character and this thread will help you promote it and help others keep tabs on what you have to offer. Seter, for example, had great success doing this with his dwarf, Artieus Fireheart.

It is possible for a group of player to get a base though. With storage and rest area. But this is earned IG with a lot of work and efforts, involving players and making fun for the server as a whole. Also, if the faction, after getting their headquarter, stop their hard work and just stop working for it, the headquarter can be removed. Its something hard to earn and you have to work to keep it.
As for the PvP mode, I found the info!
Full Damage = You will kill your opponent as soon as he reaches 0 hit point
Subdual = You will subdue your opponent, so when he reaches 0 hit point, he will fall on the ground. If you keep hitting him while he is down, he will eventually start dropping his belongings to the ground. There are also some negative effects that are applied as you hit the opponent more and more.
Beatdown = Same as Subdual but without the item loss part.
Sparring = The opponent will fall to the ground when reaching 0 hit point, but no penalties are applied and there is no item loss. This is commonly used for friendly duels.
With subdual and beatdown, you'll get emotes like Winded, Blacked Out and Concussion. Give you an idea how long it will take for the PC to be able to get up.

a bunch of folks you will find have played arelith and the only thing I would yank from their to here is the complete underdark where evil could have a true home and attack the city in only the best drow fashion, but other then that I have played here since 03 and even when I go and bounce about I always come back
