So let's talk about cheating and why it happens (no pedantry please)

This isn't going to be the friendliest post but I really don't like what I'm reading here from the majority of the posts.
This is really sad to see. The problem here is a culture problem with the community. The fact that players are trying to justify blatant cheating speaks volumes. Honestly I think the DM's are so worried about losing players that they have been reduced to tolerating some pretty pathetic things here.
Some of you have the completely wrong attitude towards the game here. Thinking you have to be a certain level to have fun is the wrong mentality and no manner of adjustments to the server will change that mentality for the player. If characters started at level 7 with a hard cap at level 10 these same people would "grind" to level 10, and they would still desire to cheat.
If there's a problem with balance and consumable requirements then make a suggestion, ask for a adjustment. Instead players cheat which compounds any issues. Real great attitude guys.
Starting a new character? The low level quests are all soloable, be patent and build your character up. Not just in terms of equipment but the actual character, work out his quirks, equipment style, fight style, faction desires, make some friends. How about creating a group concept so you have a buddy or more to play with? The desire to be level 8 by yesterday before you can have fun is a serious flaw with your play style.
There is no excuse for blatant cheating. You have been hurting the server by doing that, very selfish and short sighted. Just as EE is coming out and the server is looking to transition over to catch some new players coming in.. And what will they see? Rampant cheating posts? I can tell you that you lose players with this sort of culture going around, or maybe you'll just attract more of the same. Are you willing to forsake standards to keep players like this? Trying to please everyone and you end up pleasing no one.

I have refrained from commenting here for a while but I'm really worried about a toxic divide here. I don't believe ANYONE is justifying cheating. Everyone agrees the cheating has to stop, they are just trying to see if we can solve any underlying issues that are contributing to the cheating. Like, crime in the RW is a problem but policing it harder doesn't STOP crime it just punishes it more. Sometimes you have to get into the community and find out WHY there is so much crime and try to prevent it at the source. I think that is the only thing the players and the OP are talking about.
TL/DR: No one is justifying cheating, just trying to be proactive instead of reactive

There is no need to cheat, players have done it selfishly with zero regard for the server or the players. These players have exploited the oversight and kindness of the DM team. Now they have to waste time going through logs to find out who has been cheating. Meanwhile the DM's have a million other things they are trying to do; EE, V6, DMing???
Its a culture of cheating evidenced by the number of players apparently cheating and doing so repeatedly, and doing it together? Real nice there. Obviously with this widespread cheating it has given others the greenlight to get away with it.
Now players have to read the Post: "If we change these things, I wont have to cheat anymore". Zero need to cheat, just a selfish want. Its a computer game and a pretty complex niche here, we aren't talking about stealing bread so you don't starve, its pixels. Pretty pathetic. How is it that all the other players managed to play the game without cheating? Learning from the situation is important but catering to cheaters is pretty pathetic. You can take it however you want but its an issue of culture and entertaining this is a big step in the wrong direction.

The upshot, quite a few fessed up. Several who did it did it a very long time ago. We will sort through it, but I hope those who have not fessed up yet still come forward soon.
