tbh....
I always want to go back to DMing. It's so much fun. :)

@spiffymeister said in Exodus:
Those who want power are those most unsuited for it...
I think that's something I see very differently. I have DMed for years, and I felt like it was more of a 'servant' job rather than a master job with power.
-
Not everyone does. We've had DMs in the distant past here, even, who didn't and caused a lot of players to leave, one even stole the module to release it publicly (This is all common knowledge to our older playerbase).
Like it or not, a DM is a position of power and authority; Someone who can set server policy, who has final say on outcomes and these need to be used responsibly by someone who wants to serve the playerbase than just get kicks or go on a powertrip.
Like I said, it's going to be "don't call us we'll call you" for a very good reason, and I don't think that's ever going to change.

In the years I've DM'ed here; I've gotten a good sense of who should and shouldn't be a DM.
The criteria is as simple as follows:
Be creative
Make things fun
Volunteer to help
Demonstrate maturity and ability to compromiseHonestly, that's what it takes to demonstrate you'ld be a great member of the team. We've ignored this sometimes in the past, usually to our detriment. At worst, we get a mediocre DM when we ignored point one or two, but if we ignored point 3 or 4 is when we've had near disasters.

Hi.
I am a former DM. You knew me as Matriarch.
Its not an easy job, and yes, it takes maturity and what Moloch listed. I think I did okay. At times, there was some epic drama that was pretty draining. Those tend to push dms to take a break. They come back a few months later recharged and because they love this place. And they come back more prepared for the task.
For some, they just know they can't handle the position. And that's okay. Its not for everyone. Some leave on their own, some are asked to leave by the rest of the team.
And for some, like me, it was because of RL. New job, baby, family issues, all that stuff. Me... well. My dad was diagnose with cancer. I was nowhere near a good state of mind to DM. So I decided to retire. For me and for the server. My dad passes away last June. And the year before, I lost my Godfather. So I'm in nowhere near a good state of mind to return to DMing. But I hope one day, when I got my anxiety under control, I can come back to DMing. For now, I'm just a regular player here to have fun with you guys.

I was doing a bad quote there @IknowNothing.
Obviously some people who want to DM are suited for it.

Hi
I am a former DM too. Some of you may have known me as caek or CakeOrDeath
TBH I was a bit of a dick when it came to DMing, and didn't always use my powers for good which pissed of some of the DMs on the team at the time (sorry, KiY!) and rightfully so, so I left the team to concentrate on playing instead.
I was made a DM about 6 months after starting playing I think which was much too soon, I should have said no but it's nothing something that's easy to turn down.
There is a lot of power at your fingertips, and sometimes you get caught up with how much you can / can't do and the line blurs a little between PC, DMPC and DM. When you start playing a PC as a DM you can get yourself in a lot of trouble seeing where that line is, which is what happened to me!
I honestly miss DMing more than anything, but it's all good - CoA is a fantastic community which will has been around longer than any DM, any faction, any plot and any PC and really us why I still play here after 13 or so years.
As Terris said it's good to be open and honest about things, rumor and hearsay are often much worse than what actually goes on!
But on the flip side sometimes what happens on the DM team needs to stay on the DM team for the good of the server.
DMing certainly isn't for everyone, and you need to be so careful with who gets shown behind the curtain as sometimes it's too late once they get behind the scenes.
Also there used to be a stigma about former DMs playing PCs and getting more attention, if anything they get a harder time of things as they are expected to do more than others. Again this was only something I found out after going through the system.

@solarfall Oh you. I've never held a personal grudge against your handsome face.
But you remind me of one of the toughest aspects of recruiting a DM.
When you recruit a DM, you are robbing the player base of a valuable member. A valuable member that now spends much of their time not role playing - but policing the server, updating the module, trying to balance the needs of player factions and dm factions, debating and straight out fighting sometimes with other DMs. It is absolutely true that becoming a DM has lost this server, permanently, players that made it better. They became DMs, and looking at things from the other side made them hate the game.
I'm not that extreme, I've come back for a month or so every year or two. But becoming a DM can really kill the love of this game for you. It is a risk. And with the player base the size it is currently, it makes more sense for old dms to come out of retirement rather than risk a loss of a valued player.

I don't think this has been said very often but I like to say thank you to Strife, Gmork and Tinker for there recent and passed efforts with the server. All three have made great advancements to the server while they have be there.
And this goes to all current and passed DM's, your work doesn't go unnoticed and I know at times it is thankless but we all know what we sign up for :)
They will all be missed and we wish them well on any projects or where ever life takes them.
Thanks

I completely agree. I also specifically want to mention Spiffy and Puffy for making my time playing so enjoyable.
Cheers

Hello All,
I wish to advise I am no longer a DM on COA. This is a sad day for me as I really have the players interests at heart and look to tell their stories. Sorry if I was unable to finish anything you might have needed, please refer these to the current DM team.
I wish you all well with the new vision for V6 and hope you all can enjoy it.
If you have questions, I am on Discord or PM
Thanks for all the fun times. I hope I have made a difference to the community and the server during my time.
