A conversation in IRC really had me thinking: What are some dishes that are (or you think they are, not going to knock anyone for not knowing the origin of a dish) culturally relevant or generally popular where you live?
I live in California, so a big thing here is to put avocados on EVERYTHING. Avocado for reference. Avocado on burgers, salads, in your soups…they're nuts about them over here.
-
Gluten-free kimchi spam tacos with spicy sriracha mayo.
Given that I live in Seattle, I'm not sure if I made this up or it really exists somewhere.
Alternatively, there is such a thing as a kimchi burger in Korea.
-
Sweden love hotdogs, but where I live in Gothenburg we kinda take it to the next level:
Hotdogs which you boil, mashed potatoes, hotdog bun and on top a mayo seafood sallad. It's called a either half-special which is 1 hotdog, or full special which is 2 hotdogs.
-
One that gets a lot of interest over here is Poutine:
It's fries with gravy and cheese curds. The curds are usually a specific kind that can be difficult to find out of the area of Quebec or nearby cities who know it well. Kind of like how you can order a 'philly style' cheese steak, but you arent' going to get the real thing unless it's in Philladelphia.
Another popular item is a Beaver Tail, which is a fried dough pastry topped with savory or sweets such as chocolate, sugar, or meat.

Original Yorkshire Rarebit was made with mature Cheddar, Worcestershire sauce and Yorkshire ale.
Swimming in cheese, it was a rich and heavy dish, but tasty. -
I'm in the deep south. So, we just fry everything. All of it. Chicken. Oreos. Doesn't matter.
-
The hell we do. We don't deep fry oreos in Arkansas, that's some Scotland nonsense.
-
We make toast down here in Dorset. I've been known to experiment with soup. Also deer hearts.
-
Pretty much everything is popular here, but
But regional foods you dont find much away from here…Coneys. Salt potatoes. utica greens. chicken riggies. 17-year locusts.And... poutine has invaded over the last few years.

I'm in the Deep South as well but much closer to Louisiana, so we eat a lot of Cajun foods:
Gumbo
Jambalaya
Crawfish (often called Mudbugs)
And Gulf Shrimp cooked in all the ways than Bubba can think of

Full english
And afternoon tea, with scones cream and jam.
And a proper bakewell pudding.

It's cute you think arkansas is deep south.

Oh I forgot! There is in Sweden a thing called "Sandwichcake" or "Smörgåstårta" which is a sandwich, layered, decorated and sliced up like a cake. This is my favourite thing to make during celebrations, I make it at any time! Weddings, birthdays, graduations or just when the craving kicks in. Below is some pictures of the ones I have made.

!No my cakes, but this shows the layers

I live in the whitest neighborhood of the whitest part of South Carolina full of displaced northerners, so we always make a cute attempt at being southern by making these things, and that's about it
-
That looks like vomit mixed with blasphemy.

Says the guy in Alabama.

Everything Puffy just said, but also, Sill.
I love me some sill. (pickled herring in various flavours)!
!
Another personal favourite is Raggmunk och fläsk (potatoe pancake with fried pork, usually with a side of lingonberries)
!
Closer to the north of sweden we also love us some Renskav (basically sautéed raindeer, usually with mushrooms and lingonberries)
!
The signature dish from the region/county I currently live in, is something called Nävgröt (porridge made from nothing but kama-flour and water, served with pork and lingoberries) This one is weird as hell, it's basically glorified gruel introduced by people who settled the Swedish deepwoods and moved us away from the coast, but we love it for some reason. 10th of September is the national Nävgröt day.
!
Not to forget the Blodpudding, it's pigsblood, beer and flour stirred up and baked. As with everything Swedish, it's usually served with potatoes and lingonberries
!

That's the saddest attempt at a pork sand I've ever seen. This is how we serve those here: Usually drenched in a spicy bbq sauce and topped with coleslaw and served with fries (usually made from sweet potatoes)
