Making Nwn work with windows 7
-
Keep crashing every 5 seconds. Freeze followed by non-responsive state.
Tried:-
-Windowed mode
-Compatibility
-CPU affinity
-disabling the windows aero
-updating gfx driversAnything else to do?
-
Run as Administrator.
-
Done, same result.
-
You could try having both Windows 7 and XP installed on the same computer, having Windows 7 be the default, and then you can choose to run XP for nwn purposes.
-
when you say run as administrator, do you mean running it in administrator account or… right clicking the program and clicking on the run as administrator button?
-
right click for applet on nwn shortcut
clik box run as admin
clik run xp pack 3 compatclik yes allow hd access
loads like a charm

Checked that all your fans are running and that your system isn't overheating?
-
Relonor would probably know. He was a computer whiz IIRC.

I'm running on 7 with no problems. Not sure what to tell you - talk to the computer folks. Might not be 7 that's the problem
-
Weirdly enough I can play smooth on windows 7 in windowed mode, but it overheats my laptop in full screen mode.
Might be a performance issue coupled with optimalization-issue.
Did you try tuning the graphics down? Does it change the frequency of crashes?
-
Are you getting any sort of log when it crashes? any Error Codes or …well, anything of use?
-
If running in compatability mode doesn't do it for you, you might want to try a google search concerning your gfx card and NwN.

Polaris.. I had a couple people hit me up with a problem like this.. The solution I found was video issues.. Go to the manufacturer's site for your video card even if you have the most current drivers and re-download them after installing NWN.. This cured it for them and no more problems

I run Windows Vista and I'm having dire problems getting my games to run right since I moved house, it's definitely a graphics issue my end.
Anyway, while searching for a solution I seem to recall something relating to a Win 7 user with issues like your own. The problem he had as it turned out was that he was running the game using Direct X instead of Open GL. NWN runs in Open GL better apparently.
To change it use the "configure" menu on start up.
I never got the option to change it when I checked my game but you might.FWIW I'm suffering awful stuttering issues and terrible load times intermittently.
Hope you can sort it.

nwn cannot run with multiple core. Compatibility mode needs to be set on both nwnmain.exe and nwn.exe redo your shortcuts just in case. install your nwn in the C: apparently some folks had problems with it when it wasnt in that path. Dont put in in the program files. C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN\…. Some folks had success fixing this by just copying the entire NWN install folder (wholesale) from a computer on which it already works.
also, found thing: http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/187/index/3341490 thread about Installing NWN1 for Win7/vista including patch links for all OS. Hope you find a solution there…

I'll try it out when I get back home.

Sounds like overheating to me. In Win7 installing the 1.69 patch should make the game run without issues (not too many anyway) without further tweaks.
Make sure you 're not blocking any ventilating on your PC, play on a hard surface (wooden desk is fine, bed is not). I guess you already know all these already.
On another note NWN is kinda ahrd on the gfx card especially in windowed mode (I get relatively high temperatures for such an old game) and it is a native openGL game, so people mentioning DX problem might be right. If you re running on a laptop try downloading your GFX drivers from their website (Laptop manufacturer, not GFX manufacturer) because sometimes I 've experienced they seem better optimized even when you re sure you ve downloaded the correct version from the GFX website. Do try this even if its an older version driver. Make sure you uninstall previous drivers and restart PC when asked.

There's no reason to use compatibility mode. Not installing in program files is apt advice for most games. I suggest you make a folder for your games like "C:\Games" or "D:\Games" and install them in there, this especially helps with old games (like nwn)
If it starts and then crashes often, update your video card drives and disable shiny water (in game).
It's also helpful to install DirectX 9, as this doesn't come with Vista of Windows 7 by default, and might be an old version:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/de ... g=en&id=35While the game doesn't render using DirectX it does use parts of it for handling input and sound.
And in case it'd your nwn install itself, here's the critical rebuild:
http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Ot ... il&id=1505For people that have issues with overheating, enable vsync. That'll stop your videocard from drawing more frames then is needed and thus make it work less hard. (And you should probably clean out your computer case and remove dust).

Hey people, maybe you can help me out with this. I recently got a new computer for Christmas and was reinstalling NWN when I got this error.
"The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000006). Click ok to close the application."
Whenever I run a program to fix this problem however, it always says "This is not compatible with windows 7." And yes, I'm the admin. Any ideas?

what have you tried so far to fix this? Tried playing it in compatibility mode?
