Turning off the Floating names above characters
-
Alright, psionik recently showed me how to remove the floaty tags above every creature in NWN. I have found this enhances immersion and avoids unwanted metagaming. It certainly takes some time to get used to; however if anyone out there interested in this here is how it goes.

Show mouse over Feedback
At this point you will still see the tags only above objects which your mouse cursor is over while hitting tab otherwise not.
And if you really are hardcore, in addition to above:
text bubble mod
Never
Now this allows you to get rid of all type of floating text.
Give it a try, it has definitely improved my rp immersion and forces me to put more attention on characters descriptions and personalities to be able to identify them.
This could lead to interesting forms of doing quests even! What do you guys thinks?

It isn't gonna catch on. :P

Oh, how I wish it did…how I wish it did...
-
Meh. If I did this, I'd just be unable to keep up with conversations anymore. :(

i wish instead of showing a name when you mouse over somebody it would flash an inset that is a zoom of their face/helm. I think in some cases its very important not to have floating names, like shape changed druids or lycanthropes for instance. In some cases the names are flat out spoilers. Without some other mechanism for identifying people you really do "know" however, they are needed. If there ever was a disguise proficienncy scripted in I think it would be really cool if you try to put somebody elses name above your characters head with a DC based upon how well known the char would be. I'd have to turn my screen res down to 800x600 if i wanted to play without names as its set up now, so I probably won't join the club just yet. I can think of some embarassing situations it would have prevented, like accidentally 'recognizing' somebody that i shouldn't have or calling somebody by a name other than what they gave me.

You can still try the softcore option suggested Koririn.
I tried it and the result is interesting so far, appart from the fact that it also remove how damaged something is. You have to use mouse + tab to find out.
-
I always played without the tags. It feels better. You just get used to pressing tab.
-
Oh, sounds like an interesting idea… but I'm afraid I'd be completely lost if I tried that myself. I can barely remember most faces in real life, and I am playing on near-minimal graphics settings on a laptop (i.e., I am happy when I can distinguish e.g., a Thondite from a Golden Lion by uniform, and I'm rarely sure even about such things).
-
Interesting…
I'll certainly give it a try!

sticky post?

Sounds good, but the part about it being hard to tell about damage concerns me as I play a cleric, and I always use the damage indicator, does one of the options still allow you to easily see how damaged things are?
-
uhm, I don't think so, but at least when you're in a party with somebody, you can still see their stats on the right.
would be kinda nice to have more people RP injury (LIKE ARAST!?)….

The only problem with turning off the floating names I found is that it's extremely hampering to have immediate recognition of someone that you SHOULD be able to immediately recognize. One side you can argue that it works against immersion to have the name of someone float over them to let you know who it is when they're disguised/using a pseudonym/etc, but..
It also works against the immersion that there's only like 3 or 4 select heads of both male and female of any given race that EVERYONE in the game uses for their avatars. At last glance, I noted three different characters that use the exact same dreadlocked, bearded male head with the exact same hair color as Arthas. That doesn't promote immersion if I should immediately know "Oh, hi Arthas!" When I mouse over them, or not.
What would really be the most effective for immersion all the way around, is something I don't even know if it could be done in CoA or NWN. Before finding CoA, I used to MUD, and the MUD I played on had an introduction system. Before you greet someone, they only see you by an adjective "a soandso human/elf/dwarf/etc", but once you greet yourself to another character, that character sees your name from then on.
Barring that, dunno, it wouldn't be such a problem if there were more customizability of the heads, but the popular ones will always win out anyway.

I'm glad it's possible, and doubly glad that the players can choose this option rather than it being forced somehow. :)
That said, I'll stick with the names thanks.
