On alternate characters and conflict
-
Recently, I've had a couple of P.Cs actively attacking or opposing my character, only to figure out they are alt characters of existing P.Cs I am already in conflict with.
This is in very poor taste. Alternate characters are fine. I myself avoid alternative characters for the most part, and when I am playing on one, I make a point of using them for questing or light roleplay.
I would prefer if players avoid spurring conflict an an alts, as it's not a very fair thing to do to the other main character in question. It is important to remember the integrity of your character, if they are an alt, should come after out of character consideration, not before it.
Yes, they might hate tempans, or criminals or what have, they might be a fully realized concept in their own right, but an alt is effectively shielded from the consequences of their actions because they can be discarded so easily for a player
s preferred
main character. That means making a point of avoiding PvP, or conflict because they are not your 'main.' I've had this happen to me several times, where alts of players already in conflict with me have conflicted with my main and I am growing a bit frustrated over it. -
After I had someone do something like this then logged out while they were in the stocks, I came to the personal decision to not feel bad for people on their alts. If you mess with my law officer, I won't go light on punishment. If you mess with my criminal, I might use you as an example and to further my own reputation.
Basically, if you're on an alt, don't expect OOC courtesy if you're picking fights.
-
You don't have the right to be involved in plots on an alt. If PvP shows up near you, while you're on an alt, you should walk away, no matter how against your character it is. Unless that person is going to be your new main.
Alt's are for casual fun and quests, not plots or pvp.
-
Alts should never be in conflict. Attacking someone another one of your characters has conflict with is an ooc action, and even though I still have yet to ban anyone after a year if I even catch of a whiff of people doing this I will ban first and ask questions later.
The same goes in reverse. Alts are a safe zone where players can get away from their main for a little while and do something mindless. The one needed exception to this rule is if your alt is engaging in anything that would force a law faction character respond, and I would rather you tried your best to avoid that with your alts.

Can you link me where these are written as a rule?
I'm not trying to argue, I mostly agree with the policy, I just want to suggest to place it somewhere important and easy-to-find. Perhaps with the exact same wording. -

This post sums it up and leaves little for interpretation.
Having an alt character is fine, I keep a few around myself, but you have to be very limited in your interactions with other people. If your alt-char sees something you feel he should respond to with conflict you have an obligation to simply… pretend you never saw it. People work hard making conflict possible, people work hard getting the xp, loot and consumables required to survive conflict. If you threaten their xp, their loot or their funding with an alt character you are abusing a concession to create an unfair advantage for yourself.

Hmmmm…. Is it possible to have two 'mains' active at once?
The reason I ask is I have returned to the server after many many years away and have created a bunch of Alts to try things out I have two characters that are pursuing (or attempting to pursue) their own plots making them contenders for being the 'main'. Is this in breach of what I should be doing and should I pick one to become the official main and the other falls back and becomes an Alt?
-
As long as they arent involved in the same conflict(Be it both of them against a certain group or one in a faction and another in another rival faction) then its fine.
I will also comment on alts in DM quest: sometime I see player on a DM quests, getting the best loot before someone's main - only to never log on again with that alt. Its disrespectful to your fellow players and sadly to be in the same line of the discussed issue in the op.

That's why I suggest to make it more public then it is here.
The part about playing an alt as a safe character is also important. -

This has happened before with a player who split their time evenly between two P.Cs. The DM response when I tried to get them into my DM faction on one of the characters was that they could not join due to evenly splitting time between two P.Cs. They lost an interesting story opportunity as a result.
I can understand if you really enjoy two different concepts a lot, but you will probably want to focus on one if you want to progress in certain ways on the server.
There are several reasons to this, but mostly it comes down to metagaming, and time spent. If you are splitting time between a Goodly and Evil concept for example, you may learn things about the goodly factions or evil factions you would never learn if you played one of those characters exclusively.
Time spent is also a thing. When a character starts to become a driving part of a plot, there is a certain expectation from other players or DMs involved in that plot that the character is committed to playing with a certain level of frequency. If a big plot event is happening and one of your two characters presence is critical to it, and you are choosing to play the other one that is not critical. Other players will notice that and may not include said involved character the next time.
In other words, nothing says you cannot do exactly what you are doing Alatere if it means you are having fun. I as a player prefer to immerse myself deeply into one character, rather then dipping lightly into several, because I have more fun that way. You will lose out on certain opportunities due to splitting time between two characters at once. Opportunities that can define the quality of your roleplay experience on City of Arabel.

I think the situation I'm in is that I haven't decided exactly who I want my main to be… I can understand that other players would want someone to focus most of their attention on a particular character if they are involved in a plot with them...
I think I will most likely continue to play both for a bit and then decide which one I want to be the main and which one I want to be the Alt. Alternately I might end up creating an entirely new character to become my main and they both become Alts.... who knows!
-
My personal policy has always been I either have One Main, or I have No Main.
-
It would be really rude of me as a player, to have another unfriendly PC that gets into PvP with the same characters that my main does.
How anyone can ever possibly disagree with that is beyond my comprehension.
-
I don't think anyone is debating that, the thread has just carried on because people are looking for clarification. If only every thread went this way >_>
-
Alright, so is this just Mechanical PvP or do we feel this relates to the "Talk Shit Get Hit" rule.
By this logic, Alts should be neutral, not walking around crap talking factions the Main is conflicting against. We all know how quickly those situations get out of hand.
-
I ignore alts who mouth off to someone they wouldn't normally do, simply because the consequences can be bad for your character while the other doesn't give a crap about the consequences for their alt. I ignore alts for pvp and plot purposes completely.
-
Yes, my alts are strictly for mindless questing, DM test subjects and lowbie grinding.
My alts never RP about plots and they never pvp, just walk away!
I have been FD'd by someone's alt and it makes for some salty feelings. I rolled with it and let it go at the time, but it still pains me to this day. :(
