How to Bypass the Master Server wait time when logging in
-
I have not seen any post about this, i tried to do a quick search to see if anything came up and nothing relevant did, and I think it would be a good information for players old and new to know, if they don't already. I know when I came back to NWN it bugged the hell out of me, so I searched for a way around it and found this.
I in no way take credit for coming up with this and it is someone else's post, I am just spreading the word. Here it goes.
"How to get around waiting for the master server timeout
I'm probably not the only one mildly annoyed by the waiting time for when the game tries to connect to the bioware master server when you get online."To skip this, do the following:
1: Open up C: -> Windows -> System32 -> Drivers -> Etc
2: Open the file 'hosts' in Notepad. Not 'hosts.msn' or anything else.
3: Copy the following "0.0.0.0 nwmaster.bioware.com" to the bottom of the file. Note that there should NOT be a '#' in front of the line.
4: You may need to copy hosts before editing it on some systems, and it is recommended to create a backup of the file if the master server ever comes back. (Fat chance, I know. )
That's it. You will still get the "Cannot Connect to Master Server" message, but it will appear instantly since the computer associates it with the ip "0.0.0.0".

Sticky this please. It was in a topic about half a year ago, but it has since fell to the bottom.

For Linux users, the file has the same name and should be modified in the same way, it is found in /etc/hosts and should be edited with super-user privileges.

Excuse the computer n00b question, but when I tried to do exactly what was listed above, it wanted to save "hosts" as a .txt file. Obviously, this is not what I want it to do. Should I merely save it as such, then remove the file extension from the name? I'm not even sure it would allow such. And FYI, I'm running Vista 64-bit, if that makes a single bit of difference.

In notepad you can change the ".txt" dropdown to say ".*" If you do this, you can then save it as hosts and not hosts.txt. Deleteing hosts and then renaming hosts.txt to hosts is also valid, but more long winded.

I avoided the whole .txt thing by using Notepad++ to edit the Hosts File after Moving it to my desktop as an Admin (Win7). Edit it on the desktop with Notepad++, save it, move it back to the …>ect location
Here is a link to NOTEPAD++
//edit: fixed the linkage format

This is AWSOME!

To bypass the second waiting time for the whole nick thing you need to add a new line.
It is: 0.0.0.0 peerchat.gamespy.com
The whole thing will look as follows.
Copyright © 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
space.
Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
For example:
102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost
0.0.0.0 nwmaster.bioware.com
0.0.0.0 peerchat.gamespy.com
