Yup. Whenever I get to less then 100 exp to a level, I always send a tell to my friends saying "Life will do -everything- it can to kill me."

Try being 1 EXP from LvL 12… DM love comes from out of the blue.

its a feature, right in the scripting of CoA. Once you are within 3% of leveling, the monsters automatically have auto critical mode enabled, gain +20 AC and +100 HP and all spells have their DC raised to 100. The server wants you to feel special for having achieved something epic in case you manage to survive and level. :D

            CoAEE Kaldo - still walking
            CoA4 Shell / Osynthir-spirited, Bimpbiddle-retired
CoA3 Rarethylir, Jim-retired / Jaron Wenden, Vich ,Wesh Smith, Juston Steel, Marena, Anyndil, Dale Meynn-dead
            CoA2 Merentin Nefzen - dead

In my particular case for 11, I hit the elite bandit spawn twice on the same road for the fivestar quest <_<

It's sort of cool though. It's like your character actually has to prove themselves worthy of reaching that level. If they can overcome the small lasting hardship, they level up anyways. If not…then ye are not worthy. O_O

Of course, they never mentioned that "that" level would be level 9.
                      And level 8.
                      And level 7.
                      And level 6.
                      And level 5.
                      And level 4.
                      …

There is no coincidence in this world, only ineluctable

I've had my character up to lvl 6. literally died over 30 times (estimate of course) all like this. 4, 5, die, 3, 4, die, 3,4,5,6,die, and over and over..

And every time I've either just leveled or I'm 100 from leveling.
                        It's a hard life for a man-beaver.

Without having to post spoilers and ruin it for everyone.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the scripts, but rather yourself. You either become overeager, taking unnecessary chances to get the last exp for your level. Or you become overly careful, and therefore everything seems far more dangerous than it actually is.

Then, once you have leveled, the reason for death is most often overconfidence, or the fact that you become so eager to try out your new spells / feats, that you underestimate the danger you are facing…

Character: Wouldnt you like to know?
Olouthitis: Character does awesome things for a few months, but inevitability hijacks an air ship and crashes it into an evil faction head quarters screaming battle cries.
