New player intro (Hi!) and a couple questions

  • Hello, I just started playing on CoA and have enjoyed it so far. Met a couple fun characters and explored the city proper a bit. I've been playing NWN/NWN2 off and on for years and D&D for decades, and thought I'd give this server a try.

    I have a couple questions:

Firstly, I'm looking for some deep character interaction. Making true friends, archenemies, learning about other characters and the world they inhabit from within the game. I've enjoyed meeting up for quests from the ubiquitous "sending" server messages, but what other ways are there to get involved in things other than jumping into dangerous catacombs with otherwise complete strangers? I know that there are several factions, but my character concept isn't designed to just make a beeline for faction x because he's class/religion y (and by design; I want to learn about Arabel through the eyes of my little pixel dude).

Secondly, I've played for a total of 2 days and am already level 3 even after a couple costly lag-induced visits to the fugue… why is XP gain so high for a world that expects character advancement to cap in the teens? Or does it slow down as levels advance? I don't want to arrive at a level I'm expected to be a leader of men and still be figuring out how to work the emote tools.

Thirdly, I like playing characters that grow and unfold, that are functionally regular Joes at level 1 and become heroes/villains through circumstances that arise from their initial state. As a rule, I'm opposed to day-1 archetypal character concepts and foregone conclusions, though that hasn't stopped characters from turning into an archetype when the story called for it. However I had a prestige class (weaponmaster) in mind as an optional outcome for my first character. I have gathered that there's an application process for this. At what point does this need to be applied for, and if I apply for it, is it necessary that I actually take it? Does my character have to, in-character, understand that this is a specific goal he's working towards? How much is the metagame class choice an in-game reality?

  • First: There are also individual goals characters set that other players can help you with and also DM quest that are randomly thrown out there/

Second: It slowes down around lvl 5 and also death at higher lvls kills XP in higher numbers so we get Shot down fast,

Thirdly: This is Arabel Heroes and vilians are made regularly depending on the ineractions.

The PrC Is App needed DMs aprove it,

Here is to help you with that.

Also welcome and have fun And don't make the DMs mad.

  • Thanks!

I clicked the PrC application link from your link (/forum/posting.php?mode=post&f=24) and it said I wasn't allowed to read posts in that forum.

Quests are a general way to meet people, try asking the ones that interest your character to come have a chat about stuff after your done stabbing goblins, something may unfold. You mentioned factions, most of them have a bell you can ring which normally brings a character from the faction to you. Even though you don't wanna make a B-Line for faction X, its a good way to meet people, the mages guild is probably the faction that has the most people just hanging out in the lobby these days.

Trust me, you wont end up getting to high levels too fast, just, don't worry about it, it levels out.

Thirdly, I like playing characters that grow and unfold, that are functionally regular Joes at level 1 and become heroes/villains through circumstances that arise from their initial state. You need to apply for the prestige class when you feel you've earned it in game. Your character doesn't need to know he's trying to become the class, but he'd probably know he's trying to become a master of his chosen weapon.

A small example of how you could go about earning it -

Go looking for various foes, starting small, and building up, to test your different weapon skills against, explore the server with friends, (mentors, students?) to find things you've never battled with your ultimate weapon before. Challenge other weapon wielders to duels, showing them your prowess with your chosen weapon, perhaps even host a tournament with a prize (loot you found on a quest perhaps?) for the victor, if they can defeat you using a weapon other than the one your character has chosen.

You could also try to impress a faction, or an NPC, enough that they may offer you a favour (this could even happen on a random DM event) at which point, it may be good to ask them to hire/find/tell you where is, a master of your chosen weapon who can tutor you in becoming one with your chosen implement of combat.

    Good luck.

  • Welcome.

I am one of the players that don't enjoy PvP and senseless conflict. I prefer the RP and the cooporative problem solving.

This server boasts all kinds of players though, I am sure you will find your niche soon.

The advice given so far is spot on, IMO, but I wished to comment on one thing.

You need to apply for the prestige class when you feel you've earned it in game….

That isn't completely true. Applying ahead of time is a good idea as well. That way the DMs can check on you from time to time to see your progress and possibly give you a little attention along the lines of your goal.

With this being app free month, that is even easier than normal!

    Once more, welcome!

  • Pardon my ignoramusness, what is app free month?

  • Welcome to Arabel! Traditionally perks in game, such as membership to various DM supported Factions, or Prestige Classes, Subraces or other such bonuses are applied for (Someone will find a link for you I'm sure).

Application free month however means players merely have to talk to a DM about their concept who will then present it for approval, doing away with the formal application template. Generally speaking Faction applications are easier to get approved during this month as well as we look to fill our Factions with vibrant characters.

    Any questions PM me.

  • Welcome to the server!

  • Welcome 🙂

  • Thanks for all the welcomes! 😃
