Character Descriptions

  • Just out of general curiosity, why do so few people actually have character descriptions these days? It takes out so much flavor from the setting and from characters. 😞

  • Been wondering that too, especially now that you can change them IG.

You don't even have to take the time to think up a description on creation now that is vague enough to hopefully fit your PC for its "life."

makes a mental note that she still needs to update her PCs description

  • Most people think that "finding out IG" is the cool thing to do. I like reading character descriptions, but no need to put your life story. Just a few tantalizing tidbits to get me to want to RP and find out more.

  • I usually put in descriptions of them physically and their behavior that can be seen by all. This helps so i don't have to emote having a new scar or something.

Most others just don't because it's hard to determine how much is too much.

  • Wait, you can change it ingame?

  • I don't mean life stories, but NWN is a very limited engine in terms of creating what you look like. I LIKE being able to click and see what some beefy 7 foot tall barbarian dude looks like, scars he has, what color his eyes are.. It just gets blegh seeing blank descriptions I guess. Plus it gives you something you can react to for the first time.

ie: [Looks up at the overly tall man and stares intently at his oddly deep ocean blue eyes] or such nonesense. 😉

  • .setbio Eden

  • Because its one more thing I have to think about which really isn't worth it imo. I'll remember a character based on my interactions with them not by reading their description.

  • I usually tend to DM Kill people without character descriptions on sight.

  • My character descriptions were a great way to break the ice. Many people reacted to my druid's description of her appearance or smell (usually negatively) and a dialogue would begin (or a fight…)

I generally ignore characters without a description. I need something to initially begin my RP, as my character rarely randomly start talking to people.

  • My lycan had a real long description. Nobody read it, really. So I think. So I stopped doing the extra long and detailed descriptions.

I keep it around 2-3 paragraphs.

  • I have a description for my character that I want to add in… but the new scripts won't let you use an enter key like command... So it'd be one giant block of text... If I could get a dm to shuv mine in that'd be great but most of them are busy doing something more important, soooooo my description is blank.

  • Well, Enrek now has a description.

I find that 3-5 lines usually do. Anything longer than that seems unecessary.

  • To break up "paragraphs" use a line or two of periods.

It isn't as pretty but it gets the point across.

  • you need to have the exact ammount of periods in, or you'll have a word starting at the right…

  • _____doesn't work?

  • It does but you end up with a description that looks like this…

Blablablablablabla blablablabla blablablabla blablablabla blablablabla blablablabla blablablabla blablablabla blablablabla blablablabla blablablabla blablablabla blablablabla blablablabla blablablabla blablablabla

  • That's the actual description my characters have, it's a parody of Eraamion

  • I like descriptions. They can not be too long because I will not read them. They can not be too short because then you are a lazy bastard. Keep it to a few sentences and I will think you are a role playing genius. No description at all… Well what in the hell were you thinking?
