Need some help with languages for a story
-
Hi folks
I'm writing a story and could do with some help in making my terminology a bit more exotic sounding! Basically I need names for things like ranks, roles and titles. Latin been over used, but I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for a possibly useful translation resource for a dead language that isn’t Latin or Greek, and something with plenty hard and harsh sounding words because the culture of the story is quiet a harsh one. I don’t need fully working sentences either, just terminology.
Alternatively, if anyone knows any good resource or tips for building a language from scratch, I appreciate that too!

Barcelona Spain had its own language when it was its own kingdom. Not that it helps or anything.

Here's a bunch of horrifying complex articles about how Tolkein went about creating languages. Includes online course in Quenya: http://folk.uib.no/hnohf/index.htm
What region you looking for? You have things like Manx and Yola from Ireland or Gothic if you're looking for something German-esque. There's forms of the Aztec language, native American languages, southeast Asian and African languages to chose from.

Manx: http://www.freelang.net/online/manx.phpThe world is purely fictional and the main culture is a bit of a mix-mash concerning sources. So I've prety much got a free reign on what I could get away with!
Mostly I'm want the name's and terms to sound fresh and diffrent from what most readers are use too, to help add to alieness of the setting, dispite the fact the cast are human beings.
I think I'll look into forms of Aztec now you've surgested it, since it going to sound very diffrent from what people are use too. :D

Esperanto, maybe? Personally, I would just come up with my own ranks and stuff-o.
