SOPA
-
I often visit a discussion forum where one discusses poltics, philosophy, religion and so on. This notice has sprung up there recently:
This bill creates the potential for huge liability for blog, forum, and social media sites. If someone simply posts a link to a blocked site (or posts copyrighted material), then the owners, admins, and moderators of the blog or forum can be sued. If this bill passes …. will be closed.
Is there a risk of this forum having to be closed, too?
-
The DMs already monitor the use of Copyrighted material, asking people to refer to the material rather than copying it onto the forum.
Piracy is not promoted on this forum and where identified, the DMs tend to ask the poster to remove links, or do it themselves.
The SOPA act will likely be used to target those forums that glorify and promote piracy or proliferate pirated material. That's not the case with this forum. More than likely, if we were at all considered by law agencies, we'd be asked to remove the odd few posts that infringed anything.
I cannot see any concern for us here.

I trust completely that SOPA will not involve censorship of this kind. The Ministry of Truth assured me of this when they came to install a CCTV camera in my bedroom. They were very nice people and even checked over my bookcase for any dangerous literature.
I am sure there is nothing to worry about!

Could someone sum in two sentences what this new law of yours is about?
I'm in good, old Europe, you know. Or should I ask such things in the off-topic section?
:)

This nice new law will help nice, friendly Hollywood movie companies and nice music companies like Sony to produce more quality goods for your benefit. :)
This horrible new law is a massive assault on online Freedom of Speech, threat to web-related businesses, threat to users uploading content, threat to internal networks, threat to open source software, and it allows deep packet inspection and invasion of YOUR privacy! :x
(Two sentences!)

What I find a bit scarier is when prominent politicians say 'we don't /need/ this bill. We already have these powers.

It's the thought, of just losing everything that we never thought or had taken to advantage, and how our own government, is almost selling us out.

Is there a "I like" button somewhere?

There was but the Ministry of Truth confiscated it.
