Haunted Halls (Dungeon WIP)

  • Admin [DM]

Loosely based upon the campaign known as the Haunted Halls of Eveningstar.

    • An old ruined castle, from centuries ago, now in ruins with numerous monsters and beasts within
    • Many puzzles, traps and other trickery have been laid to halt raiders in their path
    • The castle was once home to the founding family of Eveningstar, whose name and history has been forgotten with the passing of time
    • In the heart of the throne room, there is a mysterious mirror with a woman trapped inside. The PCs can interact with the mirror, and need to figure out a way to free her or destroy it
    • The woman is based of the time halted sorceress Miir in the campaign, but I am thinking instead she is a lady in waiting from the era of Eveningstar's birth. Trapped there by her Queen who turned mad after the death of her only child. Leading to the Queen cursing her castle, family and eternally imprisoning the innocent maiden who the Queen accused of killing her child.
    • The Haunted Halls are still haunted by the corrupt soul of the Queen, whose wails of sorrow and cries for vengeance echoes in the chambers

  • Next steps here in my opinion would be deciding what happens in the woman in the mirror is released, or if they are destroyed.

And then deciding how that can be progressed by players (preferably without a DM)

It could still take massive amounts of time to do, and have multiple stages, but it would be super nice if it was DMless (perhaps until the very last stage)

Can we use something similar to the Thurmawhatsit gems in the hullack?

Also, Yay! @Puffy for using HHE! I have the sourcebook [available here] if you want need it.

  • @Echo A custom made system for it yes, this kind of thing basically requires that.

It could require a bunch of stuff, firstly, we could decide if it will only talk seriously to people of (insert race/class/alignment spectrum) and could say other things to other spectrums.

That gives it some mystery from the start.

There could be a stage where it needs simply a bunch of specific spells to be cast on it in a certain order (hints to this could be found within the haunted halls, in books/journals which drop as loot, or scratched onto walls, or even spoken by friken ghosts)

Once that's completed, it could then do new stuff, like cast spells at players who come close based on above spectrums (or new alignment/class/race spectrums even)

We could then do a similar "rituals" thing, which requires items to be brought there and some checks run. Some of the final items could be crazy freaking rare, or even actually only granted by DM's (to place in a time control, and also reward players who are invested directly) or, the clues to what items at some point, could be super obscure, and then a DM gives a hint to someone who has done a lot.

Once rituals are done you could need to defeat several mirror images of her which will spawn whenever someone is near (after a time once the rituals are done) ,perhaps in a certain order. They could basically -require- certain classes in order to be destroyed.

This could then open a scripted quest where you enter the mirror realm, and once the quest has been completed (insert number) of times - OR, someone has found the item that spawns with a one in a hundred chance on killing the boss, the final stage is unlocked.

This final stage could only be open to people who have been involved in previous stages (we could store something on a token, or have "lady of the mirror's mark" none drop items you gain throughout.

This could require you to sacrifice either, another player characters life (actual voluntary perma death) or half of several characters total XP or something utterly mental like that (maybe just a very powerful magical item if we didnt wanna go this far)

Then, it says "//please contact a DM" and it logs who did it and can't be interacted with until a DM runs the final thing. (or we automate the result with actual tangible stuff that happens on the server.

Sounds great Zool, I would at least want it to take some good old time to resolve yes. But, also be mostly DMless so that progress can be felt even if a DM isn't around.

Maybe we could include some rare crafted items in the ritual items needed, as well as exploration items, meaning players are encouraged to both craft/find resources/explore for resources, to follow up on the storyline. If we use one item per crafting subject, then it will also encourage people to cooperate.

  • @Puffy For sure. There is a danger of making it feel too mental, but, I would rather make it too hard, than too easy. We can tweak down, but not up!

    So I'm thinking:

Forgotten Cellar - Simple cavern, allowing entrance into the Halls, cave CARES CR 4-5
Lower Chambers - Servants quarters with a bunch of undead, undead CARES CR 5-6
Overgrown Garden - Corrupt garden, maybe some near puzzle in the middle, wild CARES CR 6-7
Upper Chambers - Nobility quarters with a bunch of undead, undead CARES CR 7-8
Throne Room - Where the massacre took place, behind the throne room is a hidden room with the mirror, undead CARES CR 8-10
Optional: Riverior's Hide Out - Secret passage with traps and puzzles, maybe a quest?

At each level there will be a window, which the players can take a one way journey from and climb out

    The Haunted Halls are underground.
    Maybe a tunnel/rope but not a window.

Also!! There is an owlbear lair among the upper levels of the dungon!

    owlbear lair

Oooh, we'll have to make some owlbears

We could have a quest inside, which culminates in killing an owlbear, but also, finding an empty owlbear nest, with a recently hatched egg... (cos more owlbears are left)
