Bring back more "badass-ery" to CoA

  • My opinion may or may not be shared by others here, but It's not been long since i returned to the server, but in that time I've found it ridiculously easy to get both XP and gold. Also i find the new "carebear" attitude where full damaging seems to be a new taboo in PvP kind of unsettling.

I've seen so many high levels about lately that being a low level and trying to get some xp is often a nightmare. Levels 8-9 seem to be the average level from the numbers i see.

I'm not sure what i'm trying to say here, i miss the days of things being at least remotely hard. Now any time there is a dangerous monster that players have a chance of dying to on a quest, there's loud cries for nerfs etc. I miss quests actually being dangerous. Most of the quests i go on now, people are too busy with just hammering away on the mobs, running wildly killing everything in their path and i literally have trouble keeping up unless i'm running most of the time. Rarely do i see any circumstances where people need to stop and actually plan the attack.

I miss the excitement of dangerous quests and while dying can suck, the danger of dying needs to be there for things to be exciting and entertaining.

In PvP i miss screwing with the wrong people and having the feeling they might actually kill me for being a jerk. I miss the danger and excitement.

A bit more "old school" brutality might be in order in MY opinion.

  • Thumbs up.

Edit: Actually, I don't know why I posted thumbs up. I've only been back for a couple of days. For all I know there is a plethora of badassery around.

    Toodles.

  • I second the above.
People used to joke about how easy it was to get +1 items etc in V2/V3.
Now you can buy +d4 damage items for 200 gold.

The "dwarven" method of finding traps is a norm.

with few exceptions, one tank will charge one, two rooms ahead to take out all spawns, and thats without bothering to buff, because everyone is all powerbuilt and looted up.

    I re-iterate some other's comments, move forward 5 years, re-balance, and wipe.
(This doesn't effect the Toy Dragon comments, that one spawn was a freakin nightmare - I die ALL the time and dont complain about tough spawns)

  • Quite a few players agree with the above sentiments, however, alot don't.

Then they need to make their voice heard! Like the above !

This isn't necessarily true. I assume you're referring to Occasio Wood spears being sold. The level we are aiming at for crafting is masterwork, so when we do longswords/bastard swords etc in blacksmithing, they will be +1 damage. Masterwork weapons were long sold in NPC stores and miss the +1 AB and also the DR penetration of +1 weaponry.

Spears were given a significant damage advantage because (Ignoring strength bonus for two handers) they do the same damage as a longsword but you cannot use a shield with them.

We also wanted wooden weapons like clubs and spears to be cheap and easily availible. Seeing new adventurers with ragtag clubs and daggers seems much more fun than clanking around in fullplate asking if anyone wants to go fight rats.

  • The server is hard enough as it is. Players are just getting better at what they do, and dying is still common. I am not a hardcore junky and want to play to have fun, not frustrated by lamesauce spawn deaths and LoL PvP wannabes who think every offensive emote is a reason to gank someone just because they can.

If you think the server is "too easy", then stop playing powerbuilds and min/max builds. Play a build that may actually be a challenge rather than something in platemail/greataxe. Play a druid without spamming stoneskin/bear shape. Play a fey-touched, an illusionist wizard or a monk if you want challenge.

  • If I remember well there was a decision to increase the average level of the server from 5-6 to 7-8.
    that has currently happened.

So unless the common sentiment is to go back to the "ancient" average level, I don't think we'll see more badassery.

Challnges can always be found. But one thing that people tend to forget is that this is a RP server so, actually, levels should not matter.
Meet up with people who roleplay consistenly and abandon the powerbuilt-quest-train-machines if you don't like easy questing.

Give yourself some hard-to-get objhectives rather than aiming at lvl10-hoardingcash.
Then you'll have a hard time, non level dependant!

I could not agree less with this comment.

The server is not hard, my character is hardly powerbuilt (i've played some hardcore powerbuild in the past, it wasn't as fun as you'd think) and yet i find it incredibly easy. I don't a reason to gimp my character just for the sake of gimping. It still doesn't change the fact that the server remains too easy for everyone else.

DM quests or spice bring a very welcome difficulty (again, in MY opinion) and a very real threat of dying. I DON'T LIKE DYING, but i love the thrill knowing i might die! I love how rewarding it is to actually having to plan a strategy for an encounter.

I'm not kidding when i say on most quests, i literally need to run to be able to keep up with the butchery that's going on in the quests.

I want more quests like hullack part 2, orc sewers etc. You don't want to just charge mindlessly ahead because chances are you'll die if you're stupid. you didn't need to powerbuild to make it, just play it smart.

  • Post removed by Khamal. Apologies for the inappropriateness of this post.

  • I know I used to not be able to get past level 5 some years ago. I now find 8 or even 9 coming easier, especially with a group of friends you can do most quests with. I dont think the server has gotten much easier though, I agree with Khamal that most of us have just gotten a lot better with the mechanics, and know better how to handle situations better.

Item magic has increased of course, which makes things a tad better for me and I 'd think most players. Still though +1 is the norm for weapons and armor and even those are not too easy to find (I m not sure is +1ab and +1 dmg weapons are the exact same as Enchantment +1) so in that aspect magic level is the same. So in the end its mostly trinkets that have rised in magic levels, or certain qualities that make them occasion specific in my experience.

I used to be on the wipe-fan side some time ago, on a NWN2 server, it eventually killed the server so since then I m not a big supporter of the idea. I m not saying it 's the same case everywhere, but we had a similar amount of players there and the numbers where not increasing, cause NWN2 on its own never had the numbers of NWN anyway.

Personally I can see a lot of benefits in a wipe, and a few major drawbacks. Upset people wont be avoided and some wont be as patient as to put up with it, I dont blame them, they have invested time on this even though it is a game in the end, time is real. Some older players might be interested to see the server again, but overall I m pretty sure those leaving will be more at this point and server age.

To return to the point of difficulty the only quest I remember a lot harder is the Fezznick kid, where the traps had killed in one blast many rogues. I think now they re much less dangerous, you can even do the quest without a proper rogue which was hardly possible previously. I despise the dwarven method and if I 'd like something changed it would be that traps punish those who actually step on them on purpose, even when protected with elemental potions. If the trap spikes pierce you through, elemental protection wont help you, its a fact. Wearing it is no excuse to risk it. More and stronger spike traps!

EDIT: I realize much of this post sounds irrelevant to the flow of the thread, but about 3 answers popped before I could type this >.>

  • You want to discuss individual quests? You think that's the norm. I was asked specifically to come and provide buffs after having refused to go no the quest because i was useless? I have done every single quest on this server for the past 6 years over and over. With hardcore powerbuilds to shitty built wimps. It's easy as hell at the moment, easier than it's ever been.

The incident you speak of was an exception, far from the norm.

  • The discussion is moot because the majority of the people who play don't know how to play NWN as well as others and want the server as is.

Don't worry about it, focus on the RP.

    This is valid.

I am just not sure we can satisfy both camps. If we nerf the server more, half the players will head out the door. If we add bad-assery or bestiary or whatever, the other half flee.

    What do we do?

  • The server isn't hard at the moment, at all. You only need to see the amount of high level (9/10/11+) to notice that it's not

Wooden spears and clubs aren't rag tag if they are more powerful than regular weapons, and more readily available. I don't really understand that comment at all!

  • The average server lvl seems to cycle in waves. When i started playing again there were few above 9-10. After the Grodd attack there was
a lull which now seems to be passing.

The "Carebear" attitude to PvP is actually an attempt to build conflict between factions. Goin full death right away tends to end conflicts and concepts before they get going. Not fun for those who invest in creating these sorts of plots.

The DM's have made alot of recent changes to crafting, classes and items to "ballance" the server the way they want. Calls to "Reballance" it are confusing to me.

Reballance it to what? OEM Bioware specs? If it was better in the past why did the DM's put so much time and effort into the changes they have made?

I sure don't like all the changes but many i do. I'm also sure there's no way to please everyone.

  • Besides there still are some challenging quests, the journal one is still around but noone does it. I mean there is still challenge I think, so those who miss the thrill can do some of the more dangerous quests. I am talking about specific quests only to show they actually exist I don't mean to offend anyone. All in all there are challenges if someone wants to look for them. Why should the whole serve get to the difficulty level apprpriate to the better players's (mechanically) standards?

To be fair those more challenging quests are not many at all, a few more could be added, but if DMs see that noone does the few existing ones, why would they ever spend valuable time for a few quests possibly as rarely done by groups?

That's the thing, i voiced my opinion but i admit i don't have the solution. I do love the server and the atmosphere. I think a bit more brutality in the pvp department might be a step in the right direction. I don't meant ganking for the hell of it or anything of the sort, but it honestly -does- feel like there's a bit of a carebear attitude going on in regards to pvp conflicts.

I'm as empty when it comes to answers as most other people, which is why i made the thread instead of a suggestion to get a discussion going and see if someone has something good up their sleeve 😉

  • I find quests far too easy these days, to a point I prefer to rarely quest if I can. My prevoius character was a priest who couldn't much cast spells, wands or use potions, and I still managed to make it to lv10 - and I often frontlined. I found almost all quests I did on this character easy.

Now playing a wizard not held back by all those restrictions makes things look like a walk in a the park. Theres only one or two quests that come to mind that are actually hard, but the rest are too easy.

Roleplay and DM quests are still awesome though! As for loot, I think decent loot is still hard to get although I might just have bad luck.

  • @Khamal:

You find it easy because you hang in the back watching everyone, such as in the Gypsy quest the other night. If you were up in the front helping kill Aseph and his flaming minions casting combust, then you may speak of whats "easy".

You'll either stop posting or you will keep this discussion civil and free of personal attacks.
